Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 1200 PM AKST Fri Dec 13 2019

SYNOPSIS. Quiet weather pattern continues through the weekend and into next week for Northern Alaska with areas of clear skies and areas of clouds and flurries expected over the Interior and North Slope while a stalled frontal system over the West Coast and Western Interior will bring periods of light snow especially south of the Bering Strait through the weekend.

DISCUSSION. The 13/12z model suite initialized well against the 12z surface analysis with the exception of a thermal low located just north of Prudhoe Bay that is the result of an area of warm temperatures produced by a large area of open water extending 100 nm off shore from the McKenzie Delta west to near Alpine. Most of the model guidance presented only a weak trough along the eastern North Slope coast where in fact a 998 mb low was analyzed on the 12z surface analysis just north of Prudhoe Bay. The resulting pressure gradient continues to produce gusty southerly gap winds through the Eastern Brooks Range Passes and gusty southerly winds over the eastern North Slope. Model spread is minimal in the short range and reasonable in the long range.

The models in the short range and into the mid range continue to indicated slightly above seasonal normals through the middle of next week as well as an absence of large storms impacting Northern Alaska. Long range models continue to indicate a significant cold snap developing late next week as a cold airmass pushes south and west into Northern Alaska.

Gusty winds are expected today and tonight along the Northeastern Brooks Range and Gusty winds will return to the Central and Eastern Alaska Range Saturday and Sunday. Temperatures are expected to be at or slightly above seasonal normals through the middle of next week and then drop below normal late next week as a much colder airmass dives south and west into Northern Alaska. Winds in the Delta Junction area as well as the Eastern Alaska Range will flirt with Wind Advisory criteria and will need to be monitored for headline potential on Saturday.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4 . None.

AFG WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. Heavy Freezing Spray Warning for PKZ210.

Brisk Wind Advisory for PKZ220.

GEOS Local Image of Alaska    EDIT
NOTE: East coast views moved to GEOS-16. They are experimental and not well supported by NOAA so they may not be correct so be warned. This change required redoing a large amount of the GOES code. If the image you are expecting is not showing, please let me know. You may need to use the EDIT function to update your location.

I do not sell or share any user data or anything else for that matter. I do not keep site logs longer than I need to to keep bad actors off the site. Basically, I delete them after looking at them. If you are subject to CCPA, Google ads on this site will not be based on your past behavior so you will likely not see an ad for a lawn mower just because you looked for one at a big box website. I do not believe this site is subject to CCPA but I am doing what I can to follow the guidelines anyway.
Disclaimer:
The information on this web site has not been checked for accuracy. It is for entertainment purposes only and should be independently verified before using for any other reason. There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. If you have questions on these, please contact the author. 3) Articles that represent my personal opinions. These are intended to promote thought and for entertainment. These are not intended to be fact, they are my opinions. 4) Small programs that generate result presented on a web page. Like any computer program, these may and in some cases do have errors. Almost all of these also make simplifying assumptions so they are not totally accurate even if there are no errors. Please verify all results. 5) Weather information is from numerious of sources and is presented automatically. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
