6/2/2019. Many thanks to a user for reporting an error on one of the Edit pages. The switch to PHP 7.2 caused many pages that previously worked to quit working. I fixed many but I still depend on users to report ones I missed. Please report errors HERE or send an email to me at L-36.com. Allen

Discussion
Synopsis... Some isolated showers in the eastern interior this
evening that will diminish overnight, otherwise pretty quiet over
most of northern alaska. Most activity will be focused on the
arctic as a couple of weather fronts work their way east across
the area. Snowfall in the eastern brooks range, mainly above 2000
feet will bring 2 to 4 inches of new snow, with less than 2 inches
of snow expected in atigun pass. Expect periods of rain on the
arctic coast as the fronts move through. Some very isolated
showers on the west coast today. Persistent north winds will
produce some elevated surf on the north facing coastlines tonight
and Saturday.

Models... The 23 12z model suite initialized well against the 12
surface analysis and verified well against the 18z surface
analysis. Model spread from model family to model family is
minimal in the short range with spread increasing in the mid range
and increasing rapidly in the extended range which lowers forecast
confidence in the long range. Run to run consistency remains good
in the short range but has been flip flopping in the extended
range with pending pattern shift toward the end of next week.

Arctic coast and brooks range... A couple weather fronts will move
across the area spreading periods of rain to most of the arctic
coast and plains. The western brooks range will stay relatively
dry, while the eastern brooks range will see another round of snow
above 2000 feet. Snow accumulation up to 4 inches east of the
dalton highway, with less than 2 inches in atigun pass. Winds are
a bit stronger than model solutions suggested and will be gusting
to around 25 mph tonight and up to 35 mph Saturday. More snow in
the mountains Saturday night.

West coast and western interior... Relatively quiet this evening
and on Saturday. Current northwest winds in the 20 to 30 mph range
in the chukchi sea and through the bering strait will diminish
overnight. West winds developing on Saturday night will increase
again to 15 to 25 mph on the coast south of the bering strait.

Some isolated showers tonight, but nothing significant. Elevated
surf on north facing coastlines west of CAPE espenberg this
evening and on Saturday.

Central and eastern interior... A few showers around the area
this evening will diminish overnight. Expect mostly cloudy
skies this evening to become partly cloudy tonight. No
significant winds are expected. No significant change in
temperatures the next couple days.

Coastal hazard potential days 3 and 4...

a northwest fetch along the north slope will produce elevated
water levels this evening and into tomorrow morning with water
levels expected to be just over the normal high tide levels. A
long westerly fetch will develop over the bering sea Sunday night
bringing elevated water levels to west coast locations south of
the bering strait. Water levels are currently expected to be
slightly above the normal high tide line. Wave action will wash
above the normal high tide line and may cause some minor erosion.

Fire weather
Relative humidity values are expected to remain above 40 percent
with excellent overnight recovery. No significant winds through
the weekend. No thunderstorm activity expected. Go to

GOES Local Image of Alaska    EDIT
NOTE: East coast views moved to GEOS-16. They are experimental and not well supported by NOAA so they may not be correct so be warned. This change required redoing a large amount of the GOES code. If the image you are expecting is not showing, please let me know. You may need to use the EDIT function to update your location.

The information on this web site has not been checked for accuracy. It is for entertainment purposes only and should be independently verified before using for any other reason. There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. If you have questions on these, please contact the author. 3) Articles that represent my personal opinions. These are intended to promote thought and for entertainment. These are not intended to be fact, they are my opinions. 4) Small programs that generate result presented on a web page. Like any computer program, these may and in some cases do have errors. Almost all of these also make simplifying assumptions so they are not totally accurate even if there are no errors. Please verify all results. 5) Weather information is from numerious of sources and is presented automatically. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
