Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Reno NV 209 AM PDT Sun Jun 2 2024

SYNOPSIS

Above average temperatures will persist this afternoon with a couple of weak weather systems enhancing afternoon winds and allowing for precipitation chances early Monday across the northern portions of the region. Confidence is high in a significant warmup later this week as highs approach 100 degrees in the hottest western NV valleys, with afternoon thunderstorms also possible in the later half of next week.

DISCUSSION

* OVERVIEW: Just a few subtle changes to the forecast this morning. A few more light showers are possible across Lassen/N.
Washoe/Pershing counties early Monday morning. A rather significant warm-up is in store this week, with lower NV valleys likely reaching into the upper 90's. Otherwise, most of this week future it will remain sunny, hot, and dry. Stronger showers and thunderstorms will also be possible late this week.

* CHANCES FOR PRECIP: Another shortwave trough will be passing by on Monday, bringing another round of light showers to the northern portion of the CWA Most of the rain will be kept north of I-80, although some showers many extend further south across western NV. These showers are still looking light and quick moving, with a low chance of lightning. Later this week we'll see some afternoon thunderstorms return to the Sierra and western NV as early as Wednesday and lasting through the upcoming weekend. Still a lot of uncertainty in the showers as of right now, but as the main takeaway, prepare for an increased chance of thunderstorms late this week.

* TEMPS & WIND: There's going to be an increase in temperatures later this week. Lower NV valleys may hit the 100 degree mark for the first time this year while Sierra valleys will get up to the mid-80's. Current NBM probabilities have a 20-40% chance of western NV valleys hitting and/or exceeding 100 degrees from Wednesday through Friday. Even overnight lows will be relatively warm (mid 60's) compared to the past couple weeks. So if you haven't already, make sure you have working A/C and/or access to a cooling device. As for winds, it'll be breezy through next week with just enhanced zephyr breezes on Monday.

Continue to exercise extreme caution if you are recreating near fast and cold streams as hypothermia can quickly catch you off guard if you are not prepared. Also, expect rivers to have higher flows in the evening hours due to increased snowmelt during the day followed by the lag time it takes for that water to flow down down the mountain.

AVIATION

VFR conditions will prevail through today. Increased winds out of the WSW on Monday, with gusts peaking around 25-30 kts between 20-06Z. Expect some brief light to moderate turbulence during that time.

A few light showers will be possible starting late Sunday night/early Monday morning, mainly for KRNO/KTRK/KSVE/KLOL. These showers will last through Monday morning and finally taper off mid-afternoon.
