New SHORT TERM
SYNOPSIS
Issued at 148 PM PDT Fri Apr 26 2024
Cloud conditions with some pockets of drizzle linger on the coast and spread inland tonight. Breezy winds arrive later this afternoon into tonight. Winds continue to stay breezy over the next few days, with better afternoon clearing leading to a warming trend over the weekend.
SHORT TERM
(This evening through tonight)
Issued at 142 PM PDT Fri Apr 26 2024
Similar to yesterday: Cloudy conditions continue, still some drizzle along the coast, and breezy to gusty northwest wind this afternoon and evening. Expect stronger winds than yesterday specifically for higher peaks and along the Big Sur Coast from pressure gradient change as the current trough pattern pushes east.
Additional drizzle chances arrive and spread inland in the evening with slight chances for another round of light rain chances on higher elevations and along the coast.
LONG TERM
(Saturday through Thursday)
Issued at 426 AM PDT Fri Apr 26 2024
Forecast philosophy remains unchanged from yesterday afternoon. The previous discussion follows:
The new upper level pattern keeps mostly northwest onshore flow into the weekend. While the immediate coast will continue to struggle with cloud cover, most areas slightly more inland and well into the interior will see quicker clearing times. This will place most areas back into the 60s and 70s into the next work week, while the coast will stick to around 60 degree highs. By the late week, some of those more interior locations look to break into the low 80s.
Longer term models are in better agreement that the next rain maker may just stay well to the north of the Bay Area and Central Coast as the ECMWF model families have adjusted the next trough to arrive over Seattle rather than the Bay area.
AVIATION
(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 1031 AM PDT Fri Apr 26 2024
Currently a mix of VFR and MVFR at the terminals. A weak cold front that is moving through the region is allowing for strong and gusty northwesterly winds as well as isolated drizzle or light rain showers in terrain favored locations. Gusts of 30-40 knots are to be expected at the northwest wind favored locations of OAK, SFO, SJC, and SNS with APC, LVK, MRY, and STS slated to see 20-30 knot gusts.
Winds will begin to diminish this evening. VFR through the TAF period at all terminals except MRY and SNS.
Vicinity of SFO...Currently MVFR with gusty westerly winds. After this stratus moves out, VFR through the TAF period. Winds will continue to ramp up through the morning with gusts up to 40 knots to be expected through 05Z. Winds will slowly begin to diminish overnight with breezy WNW winds prevailing tomorrow.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to SFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...Currently MVFR with gusty westerly winds at both terminals. SNS will be clearing out shortly and reamin VFR until the overnight hours tonight. MRY will likely see an MVFR ceiling through the entirety of the TAF period except for sporadic periods of brief clearing between patches of stratus. Winds will be gusty out of the west/northwest for MRY and gusty out of the west for SNS through today. Winds begin to diminish during the overnight hours.
