national weather service san juan pr
1144 am ast Tue may 21 2019

Update The early morning showers dissipated by the mid morning
hours. However, the cloudiness continued to increase as the
morning progressed due to orographic lifting. This afternoon we
expect the shower activity to be similar to that we observed
yesterday. Under the east southeast wind flow, the most
significant rain showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected
to be in the northwestern quadrant of pr this afternoon. The rest
of pr and the usvi is expected to have isolated showers, if that.

That said, a line of showers could develop and affect portions of
the san juan metro area. No changes were made to the inherited
forecast since the ongoing forecast is in agreement with the
latest guidance and observations.

Aviation Vfr conds expected across the local terminals through
21 17z. Thereafter, tempo MVFR conds are possible at tjbq with
tsra, while vcts is also possible at tjmz and vcsh at tjsj and
tjps. Wx to improve after 21 23z.

Marine Tranquil marine conditions expected with seas mainly
between 2 and 4 feet, but across the nearshore atlantic waters,
seas will be up to 5 feet. Winds up to 15 knots across most of the
waters, but up to 20 knots across the nearshore atlantic waters.

There is a moderate risk of rip currents across the north coast
of pr, low risk elsewhere.

Prev discussion issued 504 am ast Tue may 21 2019
synopsis...

subtropical storm andrea, located over the western atlantic, and
a surface high pressure across the central atlantic will induce a
southeasterly wind flow through mid-week. The combination of
abundant tropical moisture and an approaching mid- to upper- level
trough will provide favorable weather conditions for the
development of showers and thunderstorms each day.

Short term... Today through Thursday...

tropical moisture advection into the forecast area will continue
under a moderate to locally fresh east southeast wind flow. This is
the result of a surface high pressure over the east-central atlantic
and subtropical storm andrea drifting across the western atlantic.

High moisture content is expected through the short-term forecast
period with model estimated precipitable waters values peaking at
1.8 and 2.0 inches during peak afternoon hours. Although somewhat
ridging aloft will hold over the region today, a southeastward
propagating trough is forecast to weaken the trade wind cap
inversion and promote favorable conditions aloft by midday Wednesday
due to its proximity to the forecast area. As a result, enhanced
shower and thunderstorm activity is expected across the region,
particularly along the cordillera central and sierra de luquillo, as
well as over the san juan metropolitan area and northwestern
quadrant of puerto rico each afternoon. Overnight and morning
showers are also expected to stream over the waters into portions of
eastern puerto rico and the u.S. Virgin islands. Rainfall
accumulations are to peak at around an inch with isolated higher
amounts today and on Thursday, but the potential for more widespread
activity due to favorable conditions aloft will result in higher
rainfall accumulations on Wednesday.

Soils are already saturated across portions of the interior,
northwest and northeast puerto rico. Therefore, as the potential for
showers and thunderstorms increase, the risk for flooding will
increase.

High temperatures will reach the low 90s along coastal areas each
afternoon.

Long term... Friday through Tuesday...

a trof pattern will maintain unstable weather conditions across
the area throughout the week. Model guidance continues to suggest
precipitable water values ranging between 1.7 and 2.20 inches
through the long term period. Therefore, the combination of
abundant tropical moisture with good instability will result in
periods of enhanced shower and thunderstorm activity, especially
across along and north of the cordillera central of puerto rico
each afternoon. Showers and isolated thunderstorms should not be
ruled out across portions of eastern pr and the usvi, especially
during the overnight hours.

Global models continues to suggest an amplifying trough
interacting with deep tropical moisture early next week, between
Sunday or Monday. If these solutions are correct, unsettle weather
conditions could be expected the first part of the upcoming week.

In addition, a tropical wave will reach the local islands around
Wednesday of the upcoming week. At this time, confidence is low to
moderate because this solutions are to far in time. However,
please continue to monitor the latest forecast updates during the
next several days as the picture becomes clearer.

Aviation... MainlyVFR conds expected during the next 24 hours. Brief
shra will result in vcsh across leeward terminals through 21 14z.

Then, afternoon convection in the form of shra tsra will bring
vcsh vcts conds to tjsj tjmz tjbq between 21 16-23z. This could
result in brief MVFR conds. Light and variable winds will continue,
turning from the ese at 10-15 kt with sea breeze variations and
occasional gusts after 21 14z.

Marine... Mariners can expect seas generally below 5 feet and
winds between 10 and 15 knots. However, across the coastal
atlantic waters of north puerto rico, winds may approach 20 knots
during the late morning into the afternoon hours due to local
effects.

A low risk of rip currents is expected across most of the local
waters, except across some beaches of northern puerto rico where
the risk will be moderate.
