Marine Weather and Tides
Halaula, HI

Version 3.4
What's New / NOTES
5/20/2018 -- NOAA is having problems with the data feed that I use to draw the graphs. They are aware of the issue and working to resolve it. Sometimes changing the location by about a mile will give a correct graph. 3/3/2018 - There is a new GOES Satellite for the east coast that required rewriting that part of the code. Please report any issues.

Synopsis
A gentle trade wind pattern will continue today with afternoon
leeward sea breezes. Some volcanic emissions will spread over the
smaller islands through tonight. Building high pressure will
increase trade winds Thursday afternoon, and push any emissions
south of the smaller islands. Trade winds will become breezy
Friday and continue into next week.

Discussion
Dry and humid conditions will remain through today with limited
rainfall expected. The surface ridge that has been persistently
positioned about 200 miles north of kauai will remain into tonight,
bringing light trade winds to windward areas, and afternoon seas
breezes and nighttime land breezes to leeward locations. Ese winds
will push volcanic emissions north along the windward big island
coast through tonight. This will allow some emissions to reach
the smaller islands.

Thursday, trade winds will be on the rise as high pressure builds
in from the NW and the surface ridge slowly retreats to the n.

Volcanic emissions will be shunted toward the SW and clear from
the smaller islands. Showers will focus over windward and
mountain areas with an occasional shower reaching leeward
locations. Trade winds will be breezy Friday and through the
weekend as a 1035 mb high pressure system takes firm control of
the weather pattern in the central pacific. Aloft, global models
are indicating a weak upper low will drift close to hawaii from
the east and weaken our trade wind inversion. This would allow for
increasing cloud tops and the potential for an increase in
showers Sunday and into next week.

Marine
Light east to southeast background flow will continue across the
coastal waters today. Fresh to strong trades are forecast to
return starting Thursday as high pressure strengthens far
northeast of the area. A small craft advisory will likely be
needed by Thursday for winds reaching 25 knots in the windy areas
around the big island and maui.

Surf will remain small with no significant swells anticipated into
the upcoming weekend. Surf will gradually build along east facing
shores as trade winds return later tonight and increase Friday
through the upcoming weekend. Overlapping swells from a storm
southeast of new zealand is expected to reach the area next week
Tuesday and Thursday. More details will be given as the swell
reaches the buoy near american samoa.

Aviation
Light trade winds and mainly dry weather will continue across the
state today, withVFR conditions prevailing. Isolated MVFR
ceilings are possible on windward slopes. Areas of MVFR
visibilities are possible across parts of the big island due to
volcanic emissions from kilauea. Trade winds will begin to
increase tonight, becoming breezy tomorrow.

No airmets are currently in effect or anticipated through tonight.

Hfo watches warnings advisories
None.

GOES Local Image of Hawaii    EDIT
NOTE: East coast views moved to GEOS-16. They are experimental and not well supported by NOAA so they may not be correct so be warned. This change required redoing a large amount of the GOES code. If the image you are expecting is not showing, please let me know. You may need to use the EDIT function to update your location.

There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. If you have questions on these, please contact the author. 3) Articles that represent my personal opinions. These are intended to promote thought and for entertainment. These are not intended to be fact, they are my opinions. 4) Small programs that generate result presented on a web page. Like any computer program, these may and in some cases do have errors. Almost all of these also make simplifying assumptions so they are not totally accurate even if there are no errors. Please verify all results. 5) Weather information is from numerious of sources and is presented automatically. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
