Synopsis
A series of high pressure systems passing north of the islands
this week will maintain breezy, and strong trade winds through
most of the week. The high will begin weakening on Friday and into
the weekend, leading to calmer trades. Less trade showers are
expected over the second half of the week as well. A change in the
weather is expected early next week as a front approaches the
islands from the northwest.

Discussion
Satellite imagery this morning shows an east to west oriented
band of showery low clouds, with the appearance of a fish bone,
aimed at kauai with oahu at the fringe. These two islands can
expect passing showers all through this afternoon, tonight, and
tomorrow. Models are predicting that this band eases south to oahu
this afternoon. And as this band falls apart, the showers will
spread to the eastern islands tonight and Tuesday. These clouds
showers will affect primarily the windward and mountain areas,
although the wind swept showers, will at times, enter the lee
areas of the smaller islands. A slight drop off in the frequency
of the trade showers may come on Wednesday as the remnant moisture
from this band dries out. We may return to the normal trade wind
pattern during the second half of this week. The tops of these
showers are between 7 and 8k feet, with an occasional higher top
at 9k feet.

The air mass otherwise, is stable. There is a strong inversion
across the island chain based at 75 hundred feet, thank to strong
ridging aloft. This stable air mass pattern is expect to hold
through the upcoming weekend.

We have two high pressure systems that will be influencing the
islands this week. The first of two, which is generating these
strong and breezy trades, is about 640 miles N of kauai this
morning, with a 1032 mb center. This high will be reinforced by a
new 1030 to 1032 mb high at mid week. With the center of this of
this high being a couple of hundred miles further north, at 800
to 900 miles, compared to 650 miles, the trades will not be as
strong as it is now, although the small craft advisory (sca) will
still be needed for most of the near-shore marine zones. It is
not until Friday that will we see a significant reducing in the
strength of the trades, and the reduction in the sca.

We currently have a wind advisory for parts of the lower
elevations of the big island and maui, lanai, and kahoolawe. The
advisory is good through 6 pm Tuesday, with the possibility of an
extension.

Looking further ahead, the trades collapses Sunday through Monday,
as a front approaches the islands from the nw. The ECMWF solution
has the front reaching kauai late Tuesday morning, while gfs
brings it in as a weak front or shear-line, late Tuesday morning
as well.

Aviation
Moderate to strong winds will continue through the day today and
into Tuesday as well. With moisture in place, clouds and showers
will continue in windward mauka areas but also will spill over
into some lee areas of the islands. Expect passing MVFR
conditions on windward sides, especially for kauai, oahu and
molokai. If mountain obscuration becomes persistent, will issue
airmet sierra but right now expecting only passing mountain
obscuration today into tonight.

Airmet tango for low-level turbulence below 8,000ft will be
maintained through today, tonight and most likely through Tuesday.

Easing of the moderate to strong winds may not happen until later
in the workweek. Airmet tango also addresses strong surface winds
greater than 30kts.

Marine
The high surf advisory (hsa) for exposed north and west facing
shores has been cancelled due to the declining north-northwest
swell. Surf is expected to continue to drop throughout the day
today and into tonight. Meanwhile along east facing shores, surf
is expected to increase later today as trade winds slightly
strengthen today. The hsa remains in effect for east facing shores
of kauai, oahu, molokai, maui, and the big island through
Wednesday night but may need to be extended due to the strong and
persistent trade winds.

A series of highs building to the north of the state will keep
strong trade winds blowing across the coastal waters through the
week. A gale warning is in effect for the alenuihaha channel
through Tuesday and a small craft advisory (sca) remains in effect
for rest of the coastal waters through Tuesday night. The SCA will
likely need to be extended for much of the marine area through end
of this work week as the second in the series of highs begins to
build in Wednesday into Thursday. This high is then forecast to
weaken north of the state next weekend, allowing the trade winds
to ease into the moderate to locally breezy range.

Another long-period northwest swell is due in on Tuesday and
could peak near hsa levels on Wednesday. Several smaller NW and n
swells are expected towards the end of the week. A new and larger
north-northwest swell will likely bring advisory and possibly
warning level surf to north and west facing shores late in the
upcoming weekend.

It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
