(on/off)  Help NOTE: mouseover dotted underlined text for definitionFxhw60 phfo 202002 afdhfo area forecast discussion national weather service honolulu hi 1002 am hst Wed feb 20 2019 Synopsis Light winds and mostly dry conditions will prevail over most of the state the next couple of days. However, a trough just to the east of the big island will drift west on Thursday, bringing an increase in showers that will primarily affect windward areas of the big island into the weekend. The trough will finally move away from the big island by Saturday, with a brief period of northeasterly trade winds expected Sunday into Monday. The trade winds will deliver clouds and showers to windward areas of all islands. Discussion The forecast anticipates a quiet and mostly dry weather pattern over the smaller islands over the next couple of days, while the big island (after a mostly dry day today) is expected to see periods of clouds and showers from Thursday into Saturday. The primary weather feature near the islands the next couple of days will be a surface trough near and E of the big island, which will act as a focus for cloud and shower development. Otherwise, a very weak pressure gradient over the remainder of the state will support light winds. With a relatively dry air mass in place, and little in the way of low-level forcing aside from converging afternoon sea breezes, rainfall chances will be low over most areas - with the best chance over island interiors in the afternoons. The aforementioned surface trough has drifted sufficiently E to allow a mostly dry day on the big island today, but the trough is expected to drift W back toward the big island on Thursday, with clouds and showers primarily affecting windward areas. Upper-level support will not be conducive for widespread heavy rainfall, but showers could be briefly heavy at times due to pwat greater than 2" near the trough axis. The trough may move sufficiently W to bring clouds and showers to portions of maui on Friday, with a weak mid- level short wave potentially briefly enhancing showers Friday night and Saturday. Meanwhile, kauai and oahu look to remain mostly dry even with the shortwave passage. Another weak shortwave passing through on Sunday will usher in cooler temperatures aloft and a weak remnant of a cold front through Sunday night. This feature could potentially fuel a few windward showers, mainly along windward slopes and coasts as weak high pressure passing quickly N of the islands provides a brief period of light to moderate NE trade winds. It is the passage of these two short waves that finally pushes the persistent low-level trough away from the big island. Another weak frontal passage is possible around the middle of next week. |
Aviation Some lingering cloud coverage over southern portions of the big island but those clouds should clear out during the morning hours. Only scattered clouds remain over other portions of the state. With light winds through the period expect a daytime sea breeze - nighttime land breeze scenario so an increase in clouds can be expected into the afternoon hours. Other than that, expect predominantlyVFR conditions across hawaii. No airmets are currently in effect and none are anticipated through this period. Marine A surface trough just east of the coastal waters today will drift w tomorrow, then remain nearly stationary into the weekend. Variable winds will prevail over the majority of the marine area today, with gentle to locally moderate northeasterly winds developing tonight and holding through the weekend. The lingering small northwest and north swells will slowly fade over the next 24 hours, with only small surf expected along north, west and south facing shores through the weekend. A short-period easterly swell will build this morning, peak late this afternoon and tonight, then gradually lower Thursday through the weekend. A high surf advisory remains in effect for east facing shores of the big island, maui, molokai, oahu, and kauai through 6 pm hst Thursday. A moderate northwest swell is expected early next week followed by large northwest swell near the middle of next week. A small craft advisory (sca) remains in effect for all windward waters and some adjacent waters through tonight due to elevated seas at or above the 10 foot SCA threshold. Seas are expected to drop below SCA levels Thursday, with winds and seas then holding below advisory levels through the weekend. Hfo watches warnings advisories High surf advisory until 6 pm hst Thursday for east facing shores of kauai oahu molokai maui and the big island. High wind warning until 6 pm hst this evening for big island summits. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details.
