Synopsis
Trade winds will weaken today as a front passes far north of the
state, with sea breezes developing over the islands later in the
day. A wet trade wind pattern is expected for the latter half of the
week and into the weekend, as a surface high pressure builds far to
our north, while a rather strong upper trough moves over the area.

Discussion
Trade winds continue to diminish over the area early this morning,
though the winds are still strong enough to bring some clouds and
showers to the state. Patches of low clouds moved through the area
since last night, with oahu seeing the most. Another band of low
clouds just east of the big island will bring some showers to
windward big island for the next few hours. Airmass in the island
vicinity is stable and dry, as early morning lihue and hilo
soundings both have precipitable water values below one inch, with
the inversion base at about 6 to 7 thousand feet.

A frontal system will pass far north of the state today, keeping
winds light across the area. Sea breezes will develop over the
islands during the day. Since there may still be weak easterly
synoptic wind flow in the island vicinity, expect a mixed trade wind
and convective weather pattern today, with clouds forming over the
interior sections under daytime heating while passing clouds may
reach windward areas at times. Airmass in the area will remain
stable and somewhat dry, thus rainfall amounts from the convection
as well as the passing clouds will be limited. A stream of high
clouds from the west will keep the skies a little more cloudy .

Synoptic winds will remain light enough for land breezes to develop
tonight and may result in some clearing over the islands.

A new high pressure from the northwest will bring trade winds back
to the state beginning Thursday. Trades may become locally breezy
over the weekend. In the mean time, a seasonably strong digging
upper trough with cold mid-level air will begin to affect our
weather, enhancing incoming showers. This upper trough will move
over the islands and may develop into an upper low that will linger
in the area over much of the weekend. Latest models also showed
moisture from an old frontal band may reach the state at the same
time. Thus, it looks like fairly wet trade wind weather is in store
for the islands by the weekend, especially for windward areas which
could see some locally heavy rainfall at times. The airmass may
become unstable enough for a few thunderstorms to develop as well.

The upper trough should begin to weaken and exit east early next
week, allowing for gradually improving weather with relatively
drier and possibly locally breezy trades.

Aviation
Weak trades will become almost non-existent today with mainly light
flow. Thus, land breezes should continue to dominate through mid
morning at the local TAF sites with a pronounced sea breeze
developing generally between 20-21z this afternoon. Relatively dry
air over the area will prevent widespread or heavy shower activity.

Scattered morning showers near oahu and the windward big island
should diminish by midday, with isolated showers focusing over
interior leeward sections of the state this afternoon. Only mvrf
concern may be low ceilings at phny during the afternoon, otherwise
vfr conds should prevail.

Marine
A surface trough north of the islands will cause the trade winds to
relax and will result in light east to southeast flow across the
area today. Due to the lighter winds, afternoon sea breezes are
expected to develop near area shores. As the trough begins to lift
north tonight into Thursday, high pressure will build in from the
northwest and trade winds will return on Thursday. Trade winds are
expected to increase Friday into the weekend as the high strengthens
north of the state. A small craft advisory (sca) will be needed for
the typical windy areas around maui county and the big island
starting Friday and likely continuing through next week.

Noaa buoys northwest of kauai are showing that the north-northwest
swell has peaked overnight, but it continues to hold steady at
around 9 to 10 feet and 13 seconds early this morning. That should
be enough energy for surf heights to stay elevated through this
afternoon. Surf heights are expected to come down this evening as
the swell decreases. The high surf advisory (hsa) is in effect for
north and west facing shores of niihau and kauai and north facing
shores of oahu, molokai and maui through 6 pm today. Another
reinforcing northwest to north-northwest swell is expected build in
Thursday night and peak on Friday. Recent ascat pass did show a
compact area of storm force winds about 1000nm away and directed
towards hawaii. This gives us increasing confidence of another hsa
level event for Friday. This swell should gradually fade into early
next week.

As trade winds strengthen late this week, surf will build along east
facing shores, but will remain below the advisory threshold. Surf
will remain small along south facing shores.

Hfo watches warnings advisories
High surf advisory until 6 pm hst this evening for N and W facing
shores of niihau and kauai and N facing shores of oahu, molokai,
and maui.
