Synopsis
A trade wind regime is here and will continue through at least the
upcoming weekend. Showers riding in with the trades will favor the
windward and mountain areas, especially the night and morning
hours. The strength of the trades will be increasing Friday to
moderate to locally strong speeds, and this pattern will hold
through at least the early part of next week.

Discussion
The clouds and showers from an old front continue to harass most
of maui island and windward big island this afternoon. Meanwhile
kauai is generally sunny with some interior cloudiness and may be
an isolated shower or two. Oahu cleared up nicely, but there are
a few spotty localized clouds and an isolated showers over the
leeward areas of the island. Broken to overcast low clouds also
covered the koolau's and windward areas. Skies are mainly partly
cloudy across molokai and lanai and dry. And as noted, most of
maui is cloudy with some scattered windward showers. Likewise for
windward big island with some clouds and scattered upslope
showers.

Satellite imagery shows the back end of a field of cirrus over
west maui. The cirrus should be east of the big island by midnight
tonight.

Satellite imagery also show a shower area closing on CAPE kumukahi
of the big island. The pops have been bumped up to likely for windward
big island tonight. And expect this shower area to spread westward
this evening to maui and molokai and to oahu after midnight. Both
the ECMWF and GFS agree on a wet night ahead for these islands.

Kauai will likely remain dry through at least the first half of
the night. A sliver of clouds and showers may reach kauai around
day break Friday but we will see. The models differ on the pops
for Friday with the ec being wetter than the GFS which clears out
most of the elements. We kept in a low end chance of a shower for
Friday afternoon for the windward and mountain areas. The ec
matches up with the GFS for a relatively dry Friday evening. The
rest of the forecast to Tuesday calls for more of the scattered
trade showers variety mainly during the nights and mornings
favoring the islands windward and mountain sections.

The strength of the trade winds will be held down for another 12
to 18 hours to until a front about 440 miles N of kauai moves n
and away from the islands. The models are banking on the locally
strong trades to begin easing in Friday afternoon where the
waters W and S of the big island will first feel it. Locally
strong trades then spreads over to nearby maui county Friday.

A new surface high is forecast to form north of the islands
Saturday night. This new high will then assume control of the
trades supplying the islands lasting through Monday of next week.

In brief, strongest trades will be over the eastern part of the
island chain and lightest over the kauai end.

Thereafter, about the Monday night time frame, both the ec and
gfs shows a temporarily break down in the moderate to locally
strong trade wind flow. The GFS is showing a front NW of kauai as
the culprit to the lighter trades.

Aviation
Low clouds from an old frontal boundary are embedded within
prevailing easterly flow, providing occasional MVFR ceilings along
windward slopes of molokai, maui and the big island.VFR
conditions dominate elsewhere. Airmet sierra is in effect for
mountain obscuration across north and east sections of maui above
2500 feet, and may persist through most of tonight as a new
area of clouds and showers spreads westward from the big island.

No other airmets are in effect.

Marine
A surface high is currently located far east northeast of the state
with a surface ridge trailing west to about 200 nm north of kauai.

As the high weakens tonight, so will the ridge. However, a new
high will set up to the northeast and strengthen starting Friday
afternoon and night. Winds are forecast to reach small craft
advisory (sca) strength by Friday afternoon or Friday night for
the typical windy areas around maui county and the big island.

Trade winds will strengthen further this weekend boosting wind
speeds to moderate to locally strong over the coastal waters as
redevelops to the north and strengthens.

A strong low pressure system currently about 2100 miles northwest
of hawaii will bring a very large west-northwest swell that will
build across the state Saturday and Saturday night. Surf along
most north and west facing shores will peak at high end advisory
or warning level heights. Surf will be the largest on kauai and
niihau, and slightly lower over the rest of the islands due to
some blockage caused by kauai and niihau. Rough and choppy
conditions will persist along east facing shores due to the
strengthening trade winds this weekend.

The SCA will need to be expanded this weekend for the incoming
swell and strengthening trade winds.

Hfo watches/warnings/advisories
None.
