Synopsis
Breezy trades over the weekend will become locally windy Monday
and Tuesday as high pressure passes far to the north of the
islands. The trades will then slowly ease off later in the week,
becoming light winds Friday as a low passes far to our north. Low
level moisture will bring some trade wind showers to windward and
mauka areas today and tonight, with fewer showers expected on
Sunday. Another area of low level moisture will increase trade
wind showers mainly for windward maui and the big island Monday
night into Tuesday.

Discussion
Fairly typical trade wind weather is expected for the next several
days as a 1032 mb high passes about 1100 mi N of the islands on
mon, then become nearly stationary to our nne. The high will bump
our breezy trades back to locally windy levels Mon and continuing
through tue. A gradual decline in trade wind speeds is expected
after that, with the trades being disrupted over the islands on
Friday as a suface low passes far to the N of the islands. This
should lead to gentle land and sea breezes for the end of the work
week.

Satellite imagery shows a wide swath of overcast mid and high
clouds covering the southern half of the main hawaiian islands.

The 89 ghz passive microwave rgb imagery provided to us by nasa
sport can cut through these higher level overcast clouds to reveal
a shower area riding in on the trades, which has already begun to
bring some rainfall windward and mauka today. Forecast grids were
updated earlier to raise pops a bit for these areas. The back
edge of this shower area should pull across the islands late
tonight, with fewer showers expected overall and even nicer
weather for Sunday. Later on, both the GFS and ECMWF show a
slightly wetter trade wind shower area arriving at windward maui
and the big island late Mon night or tue, so may need to adjust
pops upward a bit for this. Overall though, this week looks to be
fairly quiet. Late in the week when the trades take a break, there
will still be fairly limited moisture for the daytime sea breezes
to work with. Although there will probably be enough for a few
afternoon showers, not looking for anything too heavy locally
through Friday.

Aviation
A ridge of high pressure north of the state will maintain a moderate
to breezy trade wind pattern. Clouds and showers will favor
windward and mauka areas, with occasional MVFR conditions expected.

A few showers will also spill leeward from time to time, but
predominantlyVFR conditions should prevail.

Airmet sierra is in effect for mountain obscuration over windward
sections of maui and the big island. Conditions are expected to
remain in place through much of the day. Will be monitoring the
windward sides of the remaining islands to determine if it needs
to be expanded.

Airmet tango remains in effect for moderate low level turbulence
over and downwind of the terrain of all islands due to the
moderate to breezy trade winds. Expect these conditions to
continue through at least Sunday.

Models show an area of moderate to severe upper level clear air
turbulence over the islands, which is covered under sigmet uniform
series. Forecast is to remain nearly stationary over the next
couple of hours, and then begin to weaken and drift southward.

Moderate upper level turbulence is likely to continue over at
least part of the area through the remainder of the weekend.

Marine
A surface high northeast of the area will move northeast through
the weekend. This high continues to produce locally strong trade
winds over hawaiian waters. A small craft advisory (sca) continues
for strong trade winds in the windier areas near maui and the big
island. A new high building northwest of the area will cause the
trade winds to strengthen further beginning tonight, resulting in
the SCA coverage expansion for waters around lanai, molokai and
oahu. It's likely that the SCA will need to be extended for some
areas into the new work week.

Surf is expected to remain below high surf advisory (hsa) thresholds
along all shores through this weekend. Surf along east facing
shores will remain rough due to the trade winds, but heights will
remain moderate. There will be some increase in surf heights
along east facing shores next week as trade winds strengthen.

A small northwest swell will peak today. A slightly larger swell
is expected to arrive Sunday evening and peak Monday. Another
moderate northwest swell is possible next Thursday.

Surf along south facing shores will remain small through early
next week. Lows in the southern hemisphere may strengthen and
shift east enough to produce some bigger surf along south facing
shores by the end of next week.

See the collaborative surf discussion for more information.
