Synopsis
Dry and stable conditions with moderate trade winds will hold
today. Trades are expected to trend down and become light over
portions of the state tonight through Thursday as a weak trough of
low pressure approaches and moves through the region. Warm and
muggy conditions will be likely Wednesday due to light winds and
increasing moisture, which should translate to increasing rainfall
chances. A drying trend with breezy trades returning are expected
Thursday night into the weekend.

Discussion
A 1028 mb surface high is centered about 1400 miles northeast and
is driving moderate trade winds across the state this morning.

A few low clouds and showers are moving in with the trade winds
which are focusing over the lower windward slopes of maui and the
big island. Windward slopes of kauai and oahu are partly cloudy
with leeward sides of all islands mostly sunny at this time. 12z
soundings show a dry and stable profile with precipitable water
(pw) values from 1.16 inches at lihue to 1.27 inches at hilo.

Strong inversions are in place around 7 to 8 kft.

Lighter winds and wetter weather are expected to arrive late
tonight and Wednesday and continue through Thursday evening. This
is due to a weak surface trough (remnants of TC paul) moves
through the islands from east to west. Satellite derived pw shows
values around 1.7 to 2.0 inches associated with this feature and
is currently located about 400 miles to the east and northeast of
the state this morning. Conditions will feel warmer and more humid
on Wednesday as winds weaken and shift east southeast. Rainfall
chances will increase east to west through the day on Wednesday as
the trough moves through the state. Dew points will climb into
the mid 70s as well.

Guidance suggests a return of drier air and moderate trades Thursday
night into Friday as the aforementioned trough shifts to the west.

Expect this trend to hold into the weekend with clouds and showers
focusing over windward and mauka locations.

Aviation
Moderate trade winds will persist. Low topped cumulus will
continue to favor windward slopes and coasts. A weak trough of
low pressure approaching from the east will trigger increased
shower activity tonight. Isolated MVFR conditions are to be
expected in passing showers, otherwiseVFR conditions will
prevail.

An airmet for low level turbulence to the lee of the mountains is
posted for the time being with the occasionally breezy trades,
though winds will trend down through the day. The airmet will
likely be cancelled no later than this evening.

Marine
A small craft advisory (sca) has been continued through this
afternoon for the waters around the big island and maui for
locally strong trade winds. The winds will gradually decrease
later today and tonight. Winds will likely strengthen again
during the second half of the week as high pressure rebuilds
behind the trough.

Surf is forecast to remain below advisory levels along all shores
for the next several days. A small south swell expected to peak
Wednesday, then slowly subside through Thursday. A small northwest
swell is forecast to slowly fade through Wednesday. Surf along
east facing shores will subside over the next couple of days as
the trade winds weaken. Surf will rise again along east facing
shores Thursday as the trades strengthen.

Hfo watches warnings advisories
Small craft advisory until 6 pm hst this evening for maalaea bay-
pailolo channel-alenuihaha channel-big island leeward waters-big
island southeast waters.

NOTE: East coast views moved to GEOS-16. They are experimental and not well supported by NOAA so they may not be correct so be warned. This change required redoing a large amount of the GOES code. If the image you are expecting is not showing, please let me know. You may need to use the EDIT function to update your location.

There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
