Synopsis
High pressure north of the islands will continue to bring trade
winds to the islands through the week. A dry trade wind pattern
with cooler temperatures will continue into Tuesday, with an
uptick in showers during the middle of the week. Winds are
expected to increase again at the end of the week as a front again
approaches from the northwest.

Discussion
High pressure to the north-northwest of the islands continues to
move to the east. Strong trade wind inversions were noted on the
overnight soundings around 7000 feet with a dry airmass over the
islands. As a result, few showers are being carried in on the
trade wind flow. Temperatures are still on the cooler side behind
the front that passed through the islands yesterday.

The high will be moving to the east, which will turn winds to a
more easterly direction. Satellite derived precipitable water (pw)
shows a dry airmass extending a ways upstream of the islands, so
expecting few showers into the middle of the week.

Heading into the second half of the week, another cold front will
be approaching the islands from the northwest. The front will
continue to push the high eastward, with lighter winds in store
for Wednesday, before they increase again ahead of the approaching
front.

There is some model disagreement with the ECMWF washing out the
front just north of kauai, with the GFS bringing at least some of
the front to the northern islands before washing it out over the
central islands. Both models show an uptick in shower activity,
but also preserve a trade wind flow. Will be monitoring future
model runs.

Aviation
A surface high north of the area will maintain northeast trade
winds over the main hawaiian islands today. The winds will veer
out of the east tomorrow as the high moves east. A ridge aloft to
the southwest of the area will keep the atmosphere stable. The low
level winds will carry stable, broken low clouds over northeast
sections of the islands with scattered clouds over southwest
sections. The high, interior areas of the big island of hawaii and
maui will remain clear. There may be isolated MVFR ceilings over
northeast sections, butVFR conditions will prevail.

No airmets are in effect and none are expected through Tuesday.

Marine
Fresh to strong north-northeast winds associated with high
pressure building to the north will shift out of the east tonight
into Tuesday. A brief period of light and variable winds will
become a possibility through the midweek time frame as the ridge
shifts south over the area due to a passing front to the north. A
return of fresh to strong trade winds will be possible Thursday
into next weekend as high pressure builds north of the area in the
wake of the passing front.

Surf along north and west facing shores will hold above warning
levels today, then drop to advisory levels Tuesday as the large
north-northwest swell gradually eases. For more details regarding
the potential impacts associated with the large surf see the
latest high surf warning that remains in effect until 6 pm hst
today.

The active pattern across the northern pacific will continue
through the week with overlapping long-period northwest swells
expected Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday night. These
reinforcements will be similar in size, which will keep the surf
around advisory levels for north and west facing shores each day.

The northwest swell Wednesday and Wednesday night will be the
largest of the three, which could drive the surf toward warning
levels around its peak.

Surf along east facing shores will remain small through midweek,
then rise Friday into the weekend as strong trades return locally
and upstream. Surf along south facing shores will remain small
through the week with mainly background southerly pulses moving
through.
