Synopsis for hawaiian coastal waters.. High pressure north of the state will maintain moderate to locally strong trade winds through Monday, with some weakening late Monday and Tuesday. A front will make its way down the island chain late Tuesday into Wednesday and will bring strong northeast winds. Another large northwest swell is expected to build on Tuesday, rapidly building seas in excess of 10 feet in waters exposed to the swell.

Synopsis
Mostly dry and pleasant weather can be expected through Monday
night thanks to high pressure northeast of the area. A front will
move down the island chain late Tuesday through Wednesday
accompanied by a band of showers mainly affecting north and
northeast facing slopes. Drier and cooler conditions are expected
after the frontal passage. A typical trade wind weather pattern is
expected by Friday and on through the weekend.

Discussion
A surface high is centered several hundred miles to the north
northeast of the state. This places the islands in a moderate
trade wind environment. The airmass over the area is rather dry
and stable as indicated by the 00z soundings. Satellite imagery
shows patches of stable low clouds moving westward in the trades.

However radar imagery shows very little in the way of shower
activity across the area with most locations remaining dry.

The surface high will move off to the northeast of the area
tonight and Monday with trade winds becoming a bit lighter.

Generally dry conditions will prevail across the area through
Monday night. On Tuesday, a cold front will be approaching the
area from the northwest. By the time the front reaches the island
vicinity, it is expected to be rather shallow and weak with the
best upper level dynamics remaining far north of the state.

Current timing shows the front reaching kauai late Tuesday, then
spreading down the island chain Tuesday night through Wednesday.

Breezy north to northeast winds will accompany the frontal
passage. This will cause the greatest increase in shower activity
over north and northeast facing slopes and well as areas
immediately downwind of terrain. With the front being rather
shallow, heavy rainfall is not expected.

A cooler and drier trade wind weather pattern is expected to
follow in the fronts wake. Some passing light showers can be
expected at times over windward and mauka areas with most leeward
locations remaining dry later in the week and on through the
weekend.

Aviation
A strong ridge of high pressure north of the hawaiian islands
will begin to slowly shift eastward away from the state. This will
allow the breezy trade winds to gradually diminish tonight through
Monday. Shower activity will be limited to windward slopes and
coasts and light, if any, thanks to a relatively dry airmass over
the islands. Isolated MVFR ceilings are possible in passing
showers, with mainlyVFR conditions prevailing.

Trade winds have decreased enough this afternoon, to allow airmet
tango for moderate turbulence to be cancelled. No other airmets
are expected through Monday.

Marine
High pressure to the north will maintain moderate to locally
strong trade winds through tonight. A front approaching from the
northwest will shift the high further to the east, which will
decrease the trades some for Monday. The front is expected to
begin impacting the northwest waters around kauai on Tuesday, and
push down the island chain reaching the waters around big island
Tuesday night. Strong north winds are expected with and behind the
frontal passage. High pressure is expected to return northeast of
the state for the end of the week.

The long-period nnw to NW swell is currently peaking this
afternoon and will be on a steady decline tonight. The high surf
warning (hsw) for exposed north and west facing shores is still
in effect through tonight and will likely be downgraded to a high
surf advisory (hsa) on Monday. A small craft advisory (sca) is
also in effect through tonight for all hawaiian waters due to the
seas exceeding 10 feet, however the typically windier areas near
maui county and the big island continue to see winds reaching 25
kts. Seas are expected to briefly drop below 10 feet on Monday,
but that will be short-lived as an even larger northwest swell
builds late Monday and peaks above warning levels Tuesday night.

Exposed coastal waters will once again rise to over 10 feet as
these swells come rolling through. This new swell, coupled with
the increasing winds behind the above mentioned front, will likely
lead to a SCA for all hawaiian waters into midweek. Surf is
expected to drop below the winter time average along north and
west facing shores towards the back half of this week and into
next weekend.
