area forecast discussion
national weather service key west fl
920 am est Wed dec 12 2018

Discussion In the middle and upper levels(700-200 mb), latest
available goes-r satellite imagery overlaid with model streamline
analysis as of 900 am, depict several shortwave trough and ridges
moving across the northern half of the conus, while a mostly zonal
middle and upper flow pattern remains in place across the
southern half of the conus, with average 50 to 75 knot westerlies at
250 mb across south florida and the florida keys. The net affect of
this is just some cirrus transport.

At the surface and in the lower to mid levels(surface to 700 mb),
latest available marine and land surface observations and
analysis as of 900 am, detail the center of a cool 1028 mb surface
high is located near south georgia. Well back to the west,
another low pressure system is developing over new mexico near the
southern plains rocky mountain intersections. The 12z sounding at
key illustrated a very shallow gentle to moderate northeast flow
from just off the surface up to 950 mb, with gentle east flow up
to 700 mb then backing to northwest to west and accelerating
above that. The overall lower to mid tropospheres was very dry,
with columnar pwat at only .40 inches.

Currently As of 900 am, skies are generally mostly sunny
across the key island chain, with a few patches of stratocu
encroaching the upper keys, though most of it is in the florida
straits. Temperatures across the islands are in the upper 50s to
lower 60s with dewpoints in the lower to mid 50s. C-man stations
are registering moderate northeast winds along the florida reef
parallel to the middle keys out to the tortugas, but are still
actually mainly north at only 10 to 15 knots off of the upper keys
which are downwind of the cool florida bay waters, where water
temperatures have cooled to the lower 60s.

Short term Rest of today and this evening, the center of our
surface ridging will move to about jacksonville around sunset. As
a result, our local winds will continue to veer throughout the
day, veering from northeast to east by days end. Winds may still
be northeast by late this afternoon across and downwind of
florida bay on account of the aforementioned decoupling of the
shallow waters. There is a possibility of sprinkles out in the
straits but the forecast soundings only indicate moistening up to
between 3 quarters and one inch pwat by days end despite the quick
veering. May adjust the isolated showers to sprinkles. So,
therefore, temperatures should rise into the lower 70s by days
end. No other changes attm.

Marine The only change on this cycle will be to reinsert a scec
headline across the florida straits thru the mid afternoon hours.

Elsewhere winds and seas will be 15 knots or less as they veer to
between northeast and east by sunset.

Aviation Surface high pressure center will move from north
florida into the atlantic to near bermuda over the next 24 hours.

A surface low will develop over the southern great plains and move
to northeast texas on Thu morning. In response, low-level wind
flow over the keys is in the process of veering from northeast to
east, with a corresponding return of low-level moisture and
cumulus clouds off the atlantic. Weather radar even shows a few
weak echoes or sprinkles over the straits of florida. So the eyw
and mth terminals will see increasing cumulus clouds today,
initially with cloud bases as low as 025, then lifting to 035 or
higher while filling in to a broken layer. Will include vcsh
starting this evening for sprinkles or light showers that will be
drifting across the keys.

There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. If you have questions on these, please contact the author. 3) Articles that represent my personal opinions. These are intended to promote thought and for entertainment. These are not intended to be fact, they are my opinions. 4) Small programs that generate result presented on a web page. Like any computer program, these may and in some cases do have errors. Almost all of these also make simplifying assumptions so they are not totally accurate even if there are no errors. Please verify all results. 5) Weather information is from numerious of sources and is presented automatically. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
