area forecast discussion
national weather service key west fl
1120 am edt Sat mar 23 2019

Currently
The orange glow sunrise and the faint smell of smoke in the air
over the lower keys this morning was likely due to a large
prescribed burn in collier county on Friday.

Otherwise, skies are mostly sunny this morning. The air mass
remains dry, with dewpoints in the 50s. After a cool start with
lows this morning in the 60s, temperatures are now rising through
the lower 70s.

Short term (today-Tuesday)
the main focus of the short-term forecast will be a peak in shower
activity on Sunday night and Monday.

The culprit can readily be seen upwind of the florida keys in
satellite imagery. Specifically, there is a large area of clouds
and showers in an area between the northeast coast of cuba and
the southern bahamas. This is near the stalled out tail end of
the cold front that passed the keys late wed. The GFS shows a
bullseye of integrated precipitable water values approaching 2".

The northwest edge of this disturbed area of weather will
gradually spread in the direction of the keys on Sunday along the
southern periphery of surface high pressure that will move from
the north carolina coast to bermuda. Pw values over the keys will
rocket upwards on Sunday to near 1.25", as low-level east-
southeast flow advects in considerably moister air. The rapid
increase in atmospheric moisture will combine with a little lift
from a passing mid-level trough axis to bring scattered shower
coverage for Sunday night and Monday.

Later Monday, mid-upper level flow will strengthen out of the
west-northwest in the wake of that weak mid-level trough. This
flow act like a wall to the further movement of the mildly
disturbed area and turn it back out across the bahamas on Monday
night. Surface winds over the keys will also turn weakly
northerly. The influx of drier air will end the uptick in shower
activity.

Northerly breezes will pick on Tue afternoon as the turn to
northwest flow aloft and an upper trough over the southeast u.S.

Push a cold front down through the keys.

Long term (Wednesday-Saturday)
cooler and drier northerly winds on Wednesday will turn northeast
and become breezy from Wed night through Friday. This will be in
response to a strong surface ridge axis extending from new england
down the east side of the appalachians. Though moisture will be
somewhat limited with pws over the keys of 1" or less, the strong
ne-e breezes can help focus showers at the leading edge of
mesoscale wind surges. The GFS ensemble mean QPF shows a hundredth
or two-hundredths of an inch of rain during most 12-hour periods
from Thursday through next Saturday. On one hand, this should
amount to dry weather for most of the time but will warrant a
broad-brush approach of 10-15 pops for most of the extended
forecast.

Marine
Fairly strong surface high pressure will pass across north
carolina tonight, then move across the western atlantic to near
bermuda by Sunday evening. Here on the southern periphery of this
feature, easterly breezes will freshen this evening, possibly
becoming strong over the straits of florida later tonight and
Sunday. It's a marginal case for small craft advisories, so will
keep a close eye on morning guidance before making a final
decision.

A surface high pressure ridge axis will move down the florida
peninsula on Sunday night and Monday, leading to weakening
gradients and winds over the keys waters.

A turn to gentle and moderate northerly breezes is expected Monday
night and Tuesday. A cold front will sweep south through the keys
on Tuesday pm, followed by a freshening of northerly breezes.

From Wed night through Friday, a strong surface ridge axis will
extend from new england down the east side of the appalachians
into the southeast u.S.. This will bring fresh and occasionally
strong northeast-east breezes to the waters.

Aviation
Dry air mass still in place today, with clear skies expected
through this afternoon and into the early evening. Northeast winds
will become more easterly by this evening.

The amount of moisture will start to increase fairly rapidly late
tonight. So starting late tonight, this will mean an increase in
scattered cumulus spreading in from the east, with bases most
likely in the 025-035 range.

Climate
In 1986, the daily record low temperature of 53 degrees was
recorded in key west. Temperature records date back to 1872.

It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
