national weather service key west fl
318 pm est Thu dec 13 2018

Short term The main focus of interest will be showers and
thunderstorms from Friday afternoon through Saturday night, in
advance, along, and just behind a cold frontal passage on
Saturday.

A deep low pressure center will track across northeast texas this
evening. It will move east across the lower mississippi valley on
Friday, then to virginia on Saturday evening. The cold front of
interest will be trailing south from this low center. It is
currently emerging off the texas coast this afternoon and track
eastward across the gulf on Friday. The actual frontal passage is
expected across the keys around mid-day Saturday.

In advance of the front, southeast then southerly low-mid level
flow will bring increasing moisture. A pre-frontal trough will
arrive Friday evening, bringing the first and most prominent round
of showers and thunderstorms in the forecast. With the west-east
movement, the lower keys will experience showers thunderstorms
first around Friday evening, spreading up the keys later Friday
evening or Friday night.

There should be a relative lull in shower activity on Saturday
morning. The actual cold front will pass by the keys on Saturday
afternoon. About this time, a slug of higher-moisture air will get
drawn northward out of the western caribbean, with precipitable
water values approaching 2" on Saturday pm. This will bring the
next enhancement in shower and thunderstorm coverage on Saturday
afternoon and evening, both along and behind the front.

Long term On Sunday, flow aloft will veer from southwest to
westerly, and large-scale lift will have exited with the cold
front off to the east-southeast of the keys. So any lingering
showers will be waning during the day. Will take until later
Sunday for more substantial clearing due to lingering moisture.

The air mass will continue to dry on Monday and Tuesday, with pw
values bottoming out around 0.7" on Tuesday evening. A rain-free
forecast is in store from Sunday night through Tuesday.

A flat upper ridge axis will pass across the keys around wed, with
flow aloft become a little more southwesterly next thu. In
addition, low- level flow will veer around enough to start
returning moisture on wed. So will be looking at a return of
clouds and a few weak, low-topped showers next Wed and thu.

Marine Southeast breezes will slowly freshen through Friday
morning, as a cold front starts to move out across the western
gulf. Small craft advisory strength southeasterlies are possible
on Friday morning over the straits of florida and the deep gulf
waters. Wind speeds will ease some later Friday afternoon and
Friday night, though wind direction will become more variable and
muddled due to multiple interactions as a pre- frontal trough
enters the keys on Friday evening, followed by a weakening cold
front on Saturday.

The front will be followed by gentle to moderate northerly
breezes from Sunday through Tuesday, followed by a turn to
easterly breezes next wed.

Look for a decaying west swell to affect the deep gulf waters,
areas west of the marquesas keys, and the western straits of
florida on Saturday. The source of the swell will be west and
northwest gales over the western gulf tonight and Friday. On
Saturday and Saturday night, the west swell should reach our deep
gulf waters and waters near the dry tortugas as a 6-8 foot swell
with a period around 10-11 seconds.

Aviation
Vfr and moderate southeast breezes will prevail at the eyw and mth
terminals overnight. Crosswind component magnitudes will reach 15
knots.

Climate
December 13th, on this date in 1962, the daily record low
temperature of 46f was recorded. Temperature records in key west

There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. If you have questions on these, please contact the author. 3) Articles that represent my personal opinions. These are intended to promote thought and for entertainment. These are not intended to be fact, they are my opinions. 4) Small programs that generate result presented on a web page. Like any computer program, these may and in some cases do have errors. Almost all of these also make simplifying assumptions so they are not totally accurate even if there are no errors. Please verify all results. 5) Weather information is from numerious of sources and is presented automatically. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
