Marine Weather and Tides
Key Colony Beach, FL

Version 3.4
What's New / NOTES
5/20/2018 -- NOAA is having problems with the data feed that I use to draw the graphs. They are aware of the issue and working to resolve it. Sometimes changing the location by about a mile will give a correct graph. 3/3/2018 - There is a new GOES Satellite for the east coast that required rewriting that part of the code. Please report any issues.

Discussion
Currently
Under mostly clear skies and light and variable winds,
temperatures range from 76 degrees at big pine key to near 80
degrees at most other locations. Local radars are detecting a few
showers on the nearshore and offshore waters southeast of the
upper keys along with several boundaries traversing our region.

Surface wise, a persistent ridge axis lies across the straits of
florida resulting in winds ranging from calm at many locations to
west winds at 8 knots at carysfort reef light.

Short term (today through Sunday night)
a deep layered ridge (surface to 500 mb) lying from the
archipelago of cuba to across our region will gradually lift
northward and retrograde westward into the gulf of mexico early
Saturday evening into Sunday night. Meanwhile, a short wave trough
is expected to form just offshore of the central florida east
coast, before tracking southward and down the southeast florida
coast Saturday night and into our area on Sunday and Sunday night.

Because of the changes aloft, the surface ridge will move
northward while an extremely minor low level undulation tracks
westward and across our area on Sunday, before exiting into the
gulf of mexico. With that, mixed signals are evident with formidable
upper level differential vorticity but with such a nebulous low
level perturbation crossing our area. Believe there will be partly
to mostly cloudy skies but the low level confluence appears to be
minimal for significant rainfall to occur Saturday evening
through Sunday night. However, middle of the road chance pops will
be inserted beginning Saturday evening, but with only isolated 10
to 20 percent pops until then. High temperatures will hover
around 90 degrees along most island communities except in the
lower to perhaps mid 90s at mount marathon today and Saturday,
with overnight lows mainly near 80 degrees.

Long term (Monday through Thursday)
a western atlantic surface ridge will lie across the northern half
of the sunshine state before splintering during the middle and
latter part of next week. Meanwhile, the aforementioned (2nd
paragraph) upper level trough will move westward and into the
gulf of mexico resulting in a chaotic flow aloft. With that set
up, a weak pressure pattern along with ample low level moisture
should allow mesoscale forcing in the form of wet cloud line
genesis and perhaps cells migrating off our large and adjacent
land masses. Hence, low chance pops which are near to slightly
below ece mex MOS guidance. Enough strong insolation will allow
high temperatures to climb near 90 with overnight lows near 80
degrees away from any downpours.

Marine
Away from any cells, light to occasional gentle winds will prevail
on all keys coastal waters through Sunday, before a subtle and
brief increase occurs Sunday into Monday. Thereafter, winds will
generally be light to gentle well into next week.

Aviation
Although there is a slight chance of showers and
thunderstorms through the forecast period, the most likely
conditions will beVFR at the keyw and kmth terminals through
23 06z. Expect mostly light breezes favoring the southwesterly
direction.

Climate
In 1901, the daily record low temperature of 70f was last
recorded in key west. Temperature records date back to 1872.

I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. These are not intended to be fact, they are my opinions. 4) Small programs that generate result presented on a web page. Like any computer program, these may and in some cases do have errors. Almost all of these also make simplifying assumptions so they are not totally accurate even if there are no errors. Please verify all results. 5) Weather information is from numerious of sources and is presented automatically. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
