area forecast discussion
national weather service tampa bay ruskin fl
726 am edt Tue oct 16 2018

Aviation
MainlyVFR conditions are expected through the forecast period,
although some brief patchy fog will be possible within the next hour
or so. Winds will be light out of the southeast this morning before
turning onshore with a weak sea breeze this afternoon. Rain chances
are too low to mention.

Prev discussion issued 345 am edt Tue oct 16 2018
short term (today - Wednesday)...

a strong mid level ridge of high pressure centered just east
of florida will hold in place today and Wednesday as a
strong trough swings through eastern canada. At the surface,
a weak subtropical ridge north of florida will shift
slightly to the east tonight and Thursday as a stronger area
of high pressure builds in across the eastern us. This
pattern will support continued easterly flow that will be
light enough to allow a limited west coast sea breeze,
briefly turning winds onshore near the coast during the
afternoon. Subsidence from the mid level ridge will keep
conditions warm and fairly dry, with high temperatures
approaching record values again today and Wednesday. Most of
the area will stay rain free today, then areas south of
interstate 4 could see some isolated to scattered to showers
and storms Wednesday afternoon.

Long term (Wednesday night - Monday)...

a strong mid level trough will swing from eastern canada
through new england during the second half of the week,
allowing the mid level ridge to build back to the west
across florida. At the surface, broad ridging will shift
from the eastern us into the western atlantic, forcing a
backdoor cold front southwest into florida on Thursday and
Friday. This will lead to building rain chances and
temperatures moderating slightly through Saturday.

A deeper upper mid level trough will swing through the great
lakes region during the upcoming weekend, sending a cold
front through the southeastern us. This front is forecast to
move into the florida peninsula on Sunday, leading to an
increase in winds, building rain chances ahead of the front,
and temperatures cooling to near to slightly below normal
Sunday and Monday.

Aviation...

mostlyVFR conditions expected through the next 24 hours,
although some patchy fog will be possible during the early
morning hours, mainly over southwest florida and across the
interior, with MVFR or brief ifr conditions possible. A few
showers cannot be ruled out during the afternoon and early
evening under generally easterly flow, with a limited sea
breeze near the coast.

Marine...

high pressure will hold just north of the gulf of mexico
through the week, with generally easterly winds continuing
across the coastal waters. A weak afternoon seabreeze will
setup each day, allowing winds to turn onshore near the
coast. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms will
be expected over the coastal waters each day starting
Wednesday, with locally hazardous boating conditions
possible in the vicinity of some of the stronger storms.

Fire weather...

no concerns, as humidity will remain well above critical
levels through the period.

NOTE: East coast views moved to GEOS-16. They are experimental and not well supported by NOAA so they may not be correct so be warned. This change required redoing a large amount of the GOES code. If the image you are expecting is not showing, please let me know. You may need to use the EDIT function to update your location.

There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. These are not intended to be fact, they are my opinions. 4) Small programs that generate result presented on a web page. Like any computer program, these may and in some cases do have errors. Almost all of these also make simplifying assumptions so they are not totally accurate even if there are no errors. Please verify all results. 5) Weather information is from numerious of sources and is presented automatically. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
