area forecast discussion
national weather service tampa bay ruskin fl
351 am edt Thu aug 24 2017

Short term (today-Friday)
A strong mid upper-level low continues to lift away from north of the
new england region, with troughing extending across much of the
eastern half of the country and ridging to the west. This trough does
not quite extend south over florida, where weak ridging resides. At
the surface, the ridge axis remains across the central part of the
florida peninsula, with a weak trough located somewhere off the
southwest florida coast. Radar imagery early this morning shows
mostly dry conditions across the forecast area, but scattered
convection is found just south of our waters.

The weak high pressure aloft will generally remain in place for today
and Friday as the east coast trough continues to lift away. The
surface is where things get a bit more interesting. The trough
mentioned has been highlighted by the national hurricane center as
having a low chance for tropical development as it is rather ill-
defined. Nevertheless, it will likely help increase our rainfall
amounts as we will have lift associated with the trough along with
help from the sea breeze. Some higher rainfall totals will certainly
be possible, along with some localized flooding.

The overall set-up for Friday is similar to today, although models
tend to to show a better-defined low trough over the region for
Friday. Again, this feature will likely lead to increased rainfall
chances, with some higher amounts likely and localized flooding
possible.

Long term (Friday night-Wednesday)
Aloft - broad troughiness continues over the eastern u.S. As what
is currently tropical storm harvey resides in the western gulf...

please monitor national hurricane center forecasts for details...

through the weekend as weak ridging from the atlantic reaches to the
central gulf. After the weekend harvey is expected to move toward
the tx la coast as the ridge strengthens across fl and the gulf.

Surface - the period kicks off with a meandering frontal boundary
strung out along the gulf coast... With the aforementioned tropical
storm harvey near the tx coast and a weak surface trough located in
fl. The atlantic subtropical ridge stretches across the bahamas and
through the florida straits... Between the keys and cuba. These
features drift around nearly in place during the weekend. For the
start of the workweek the fl trough slides out over the atlantic and
deepens into a low that tracks along the eastern seaboard with the
frontal boundary sagging south into fl then lifting back north. The
subtropical ridge axis remains along the north side of cuba.

The frontal boundary to the north and the deepening surface trough
will be the main drivers for the sensible weather across the area.

Deep moisture... With model pwat values 1.8 to over 2 inches remains
in place which with some lift from the frontal boundary and
afternoon sea breeze circulations will support isolated-scattered-
numerous showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures will run above
normal for the lows while the highs will be around to just above
normal.

Aviation
MainlyVFR conditions are expected through the forecast period. Winds
will remain rather light and variable overnight and into Thursday
morning, with the sea breeze then turning winds onshore at the coast
in the afternoon. All terminals will have a good chance for
thunderstorms at some point in the afternoon and evening, with vcts
in the forecast starting around 17-18z.

Marine
An area of low pressure lingering off the southwest florida coast
will slowly drift north or northeast Friday into Saturday, bringing a
greater chance for showers and thunderstorms for the coastal waters.

A more typical summertime pattern will return later this weekend into
early next week as this low pulls away to the northeast. No headlines
are in place at this time, but winds will periodically increase to
around 15 knots and close to exercise caution criteria at times
through the weekend.

Fire weather
No fire weather concerns for the next several days as relative
humidity levels will remain above critical levels. No significant
visibility restrictions are expected.
