area forecast discussion
national weather service tampa bay ruskin fl
230 pm est Fri jan 19 2018

Short term (this afternoon through Saturday)
Aloft - a low on the british columbia coast troughs down pacific
coastal waters to offshore central ca while a short wave trough
is on the gulf coast... Along the tx la border. The axis of an
atlantic ridge hovers above the less antilles. These features are
providing southwesterly flow over the region. Surface - high
pressure centered on the al fl border sprawls across the southeast
quarter of the nation and most of the gulf of mexico... Providing
northeasterly low level flow for the area. A frontal boundary
stretches from the northern rockies to the upper great lakes.

The western upper trough slides into intermountain west... The
short wave trough moves to the southeastern states... And the ridge
meanders above the lesser antilles. These provide southwesterly
to westerly flow aloft the area. The surface high pressure center
tracks east... Reaching latitude 30 longitude 70 Sat afternoon...

with low level flow shifting to easterly.

The southwest west flow aloft will slowly bring in a subtle increase
in moisture. Model pwat values of 0.6 inches or less this afternoon
climb to 0.5 to 1.0 inches over night then around 1.0 inch for sat.

The bulk of this is aloft and results in high cloudiness streaming
across. The limited moisture at lower levels will preclude any
significant fog although can not rule out patchy ground fog... But
not enough to include in the forecasts. The warming trend
continues but lows stay below normal... Especially up north. Levy
county could see localized 32 degrees but only briefly so a warning
is not warranted. And despite the dry air levy may see a few
pockets of frost. The highs Sat will be warmer that today and may
be to close to normal... At least in the south.

Mid term long term (Saturday night - Friday)
Models in good agreement through mid week then start to diverge.

Expect shortwave trough to quickly move over the region to finish
the weekend then large upper low moves from the southern rockies
through the great lakes and then new england by mid week. Weak
ridging from the N carib begins to nudge into the area late next
week.

At the surface, weakened western atlantic high pressure ridges over
the area with light e-se flow continuing to warm temps and moderate
dew points through the weekend and into Monday. Trailing cold front
associated with mid western storm system to move over fl peninsula
late Monday into Tuesday with about 20%-40% pops area wide for light
showers. High pressure to move from the plains and build through the
deep south mid week, but source region not too cold, so temps drop
to near normal levels. The high shifts into the W atlantic at the
end of the week with breezy easterly flow and some weak instability
to keep isolated rain chances in the forecast as temps warm.

Aviation
18z tafs.VFR conditions continue under increasing high clouds.

Lower levels remain fairly dry... Precluding any significant fg br.

Although lal and pgd could see limited br... But will leave out of
those tafs. Light n-ne winds take on a more onshore component this
afternoon then shift back to the n-ne this evening... Then NE toward
sunrise sat.

Marine
High pressure north of the waters moves east... Out over the atlantic
sat... With northeast winds becoming easterly and a gradient relaxed
enough to allow an onshore shift in the winds near the coast this
afternoon and again sat. This high moves east during early in the
week with winds veering to southerly... And continue veering mid to
late week as a font sweeps through... And is quickly followed by
high pressure building in. Speeds remain rather benign... No more
than 15 knots.

Fire weather
Dry air continues this afternoon with many locations at or below 35
percent. However erc values and wind speeds are both too low to
support any red flag warnings. Moistening of the air mass begins sat
with the minimum rh above critical levels for much of next week.

Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
