SYNOPSIS
An upper level disturbance may trigger scattered showers or isolated thunderstorms over the San Bernardino Mountains this afternoon and early evening. Dry weather is forecast Thursday through Sunday. Night and morning low clouds west of the mountains will clear to near the coast each afternoon.

DISCUSSION
FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES...

The precipitable water on the 12Z NKX sounding this morning was 0.67", up from 0.41" Tuesday morning. This increase is primarily due to the mid-level moisture advection in the northeast flow around the closed upper low over northern Baja.

Weak perturbations in this flow are generating a stream of altocumulus clouds over the southern Mojave desert that are moving from northeast to southwest over San Bernardino and Riverside County. San Bernardino Mountain web cams show virga falling from these high based clouds, and a few rain drops will likely reach the ground today. The lapse rate was 8.7 C/km in the 800-600 mb layer this morning, and further increases in instability are likely this afternoon. CAPE values peak between 200-500 J/kg, high enough for an isolated thunderstorm to form over the San Bernardino Mountains through early evening. The forecast was updated to reflect this change.

West of the mountains the marine layer was 3200-3500 feet deep and low clouds were banked up against the foothills at sunrise. These low clouds will clear back to near the coast this afternoon, but may not completely clear in some areas within a mile or two of the coast. We expect an encore performance of this tomorrow.

Highs today will be similar to yesterdays highs, then a couple degrees warmer Thursday and Friday as the upper low moves east and weak ridging builds over the Southwest.

Over the weekend the night and morning low clouds will once again extend into the valleys each morning with slow clearing to near the coast in the afternoon. A trough deepening off the coast of Southern California will bring a few degrees of cooling Sunday, and even greater cooling Monday.

AVIATION
151600Z
Coast/Valleys
BKN/OVC low clouds with layered cloud bases 1500-3000 ft MSL will very gradually clear 17Z-19Z in the valleys and 19Z-21Z near the coast where only partial afternoon clearing will occur. ISOLD -SHRA will occur through 20Z with most VIS above 5 miles below the cloud bases. Areas of higher terrain will be obscured through 20Z. Stratus will expand again this evening and cover all coastal and valley locations by 09Z Thu with bases 1700-2500 ft MSL and tops to 3500 ft MSL. Slow clearing will occur again Thu, with some coastal areas remaining cloudy Thu afternoon.

Mountains/Deserts...Areas of clouds at/above 9000 ft MSL will continue through 04Z Thu. Isolated -SHRA will occur mainly in the San Bernardino County mountains and adjacent high deserts and Riverside County mountains through 04Z Thu, along with a slight chance of -TSRA. West winds will gust locally 25-35 kt through mountain passes into adjacent desert slopes after 23Z and continuing through 16Z Thu.

No hazardous marine conditions are expected through Sunday.
