area forecast discussion
national weather service los angeles oxnard ca
1029 am pst Mon feb 19 2018

Synopsis 18 345 pm.

Light rain and mountain snow will fall across much of the region
tonight and Monday with snow falling as low as 1500 feet Monday
morning. Gusty winds and a blast of cold air will create very cold
wind chill temperatures through Monday with frost or freezing
conditions Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Conditions will be dry
but cool for the remainder of the week.

Short term (tdy-wed) 19 920 am.

Update...

watching on radar the clouds drop in from the north associated
with the trof moving through the area. Radar suggests light rain
over slo co but nothing recorded on rain gages so far. Local radar
says the snow level is about 2200 feet this morning near lox.

Still expecting fairly widespread gusty winds this afternoon and a
chance of light showers per the previous discussion.

***from previous discussion***
the axis of a positive tilt trof extends from idaho to reno to
northern slo county. This trof will slowly move to the sse and
strong north flow will set up behind it. Since this trof had an
overland trajectory it has very little moisture. Because of this
there will not be much rainfall with this system. There will be
chance of a couple showers over slo and western sba counties but
they will not produce much in the way of rainfall amounts. There
is also a slight chc of shower in the san gabriel vly where the
low level flow will wrap around and move up the foothills. The
only real chc of significant precipitation will be over the mtns
esp on the north facing slopes near the kern county line.

This is a very cold system and snow levels will plummet to between
1500 to 2000 feet during this morning. Snowfall amounts in the
mountains above 2500 feet near the kern county line will be
between 2 to 4 inches with 1-2 inches possible for the rest of the
mtns including portions of the santa barbara county mountains. An
inch of snow could fall over portions of the cuyama valley including
highway 166. A winter weather advisory is in effect for the mtns
of l.A. And vtu counties as well as the santa barbara mountains
and the cuyama valley this through tonight for the snow and
advisory level northwest winds. There could be a dusting of snow
across the antelope valley foothills as well... Especially across
the northwestern portion.

The strong and cold northwesterly flow behind the trof axis will
produce gusty northwest to north winds. Many areas will see
advisory level winds today and tonight see the product laxnpwlox
for full details on the strong winds. The strong winds in the
mtns are covered by the winter weather advisory.

It will be very cool today with hgts a full 10 dm lower than
average. MAX temps across the coasts and vlys will only be in the
mid 50s to the lower 60s. The winds and the cold temperatures will
combine to produce wind chill values between 10 degrees and -10
degrees in the higher elevation of the mountains.

Skies will clear tonight save for the north slopes where mostly
cloudy skies and scattered snow showers will persist late into the
night.

The real area of weather concern for the area will be the
overnight lows both tonight and Tuesday night. The cold dry
airmass will combine with clear skies to allow for dramatic
overnight cooling. Almost all areas except the la coastal area and
the ventura county coast will see freezing or near freezing temps
tonight and Tuesday night. Hard freeze warnings are in effect for
the central coast, the santa ynez and cuyama valleys, and the
interior valleys of ventura county, especially for the ojai
valley. Freeze warnings are in effect across the south coast of
sba county, coastal sections of vta county, and the vta county
coastal valleys. Very cold temperatures in the teens and lower 20s
will also be common across the antelope vly and the interior slo
vly.

Broad scale cyclonic flow will persist over the area both Tuesday
and Wednesday. Hgts will rise some but will still be below normal.

Max temps across the coast and vlys will only be in the lower to
mid 60s each day. MAX temps everywhere will be about 8 to 12
degrees blo normal.

Long term (thu-sun) 19 321 am.

The GFS and the ec agree that broad scale cold cyclonic flow will
continue over the area through Friday. The GFS brings an embedded
short wave through the area on Thursday while the ec hangs it back
and does not move it over until Friday. Much like today's system
this one will take a dry overland trajectory and the chc of rain
will only be slight. Broad brushed some low pops and clouds into
the Thursday afternoon through Friday time frame. These impulses
will usher in some more cold air along with gusty winds. MAX temps
across csts and vlys will again struggle to reach 60 degrees.

A little pop up ridge will follow on Friday night and Saturday
morning and this should be good for a few degrees of warming but
not as much as possible since hgts will be falling in the
afternoon.

Dry NW flow sets up Sunday. MAX temps will be similar to
Saturday's and there will really not be much in the way of weather
concerns.
