Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA 205 PM PDT Sat May 11 2024

SYNOPSIS
11/134 PM.

A quiet weather pattern is expected through early next week with near normal temperatures. Widespread night and morning low clouds are expected across coast and valleys as onshore flow increases.
Mostly minor day to day changes in temperatures are expected through Sunday, then slight cooling is likely each day through next Wednesday.

.SHORT TERM (TDY-TUE)...11/151 PM.

The low pressure system that was responsible for the isolated showers Friday has moved into Colorado and weak high pressure is following in its wake. There is still some shallow cumulus over the mountains but chances are less than 5% that any showers or storms will form from them as warmer air is moving in aloft.
Stratus continues to hug the coastline this afternoon and in many areas clouds extend a few miles inland, keeping the coastal areas under solid low cloud cover well into the afternoon.

This overall pattern is not expected to change much over the next several days. The weak high tonight might briefly lower the marine layer depth somewhat but low cloud coverage should be similar to the last few nights, except maybe not quite as far inland.
Clearing should be a little earlier Sunday for valleys, but not for most coastal areas. This should lead to slight warming inland but similarly cool at the coast.

Weak low pressure returns late Monday and Tuesday leading to a deeper and later clearing stratus layer and cooler temps.
Increasing onshore flow will generate a stronger sea breeze, especially through the mountain passes and Antelope Valley. There is a small chance (around 10%) that the upper low will generate enough instability Tuesday to create some afternoon buildups over the mountains and perhaps an isolated shower or storm.

.LONG TERM (WED-SAT)...11/204 PM.

Onshore flow peaks Wednesday creating gusty winds for some interior areas. Otherwise, the upper low will start to move east later Wednesday into Thursday and be replaced by weak ridging Friday/Saturday. This won't have much impact overall on the local weather as temperatures in most areas will change very little and remain near to slightly below normal. A moderate to strong onshore flow will maintain a solid marine layer along the coast pushing into most coastal valleys overnight.

AVIATION
11/2003Z.

At 2000Z at KLAX, the marine layer was 1200 feet deep. The top of the inversion was at 3000 feet with a max temperature of 21 C.

Generally moderate confidence in TAFs. Good confidence that clearing pattern today will be similar to yesterday (Friday).
This evening, IFR to LIFR ceilings will return for coastal and nearby valley sites from KSMX southward. Cig and occasional vsby restrictions will continue through at least Sunday morning. Flight cat transitions may be off by +/- 2 hours. Also, there is a 30% chance that restrictions do not return to KVNY.

KLAX...Moderate confidence in TAF. There is a 30% chc of VFR conds 21Z-01Z each day. No significant easterly wind component is expected.

KBUR...Moderate confidence in TAF. Good confidence that conds transition to VFR after 17Z tomorrow.

MARINE
11/103 PM.

For the Outer Waters, moderate to high confidence in current forecast. For PZZ673 and PZZ676, Small Craft Advisory (SCA) winds are expected this evening and overnight tonight along with Sunday evening and night, and there is a 50-70% chance for SCA winds Monday evening and night. Otherwise, SCA conditions are not expected through Thursday over the Outer Waters.

For the Inner Waters north of Point Sal, high confidence in current forecast as winds and seas are expected to remain below SCA levels through Thursday.

For the Inner Waters south of Point Conception, moderate to high confidence in current forecast. Through Thursday, winds and seas will remain below SCA levels for most areas. The only exception will be the western half of the Santa Barbara Channel, where there is a 20% chance of SCA winds this evening, and a 30-40% chance of SCA winds Sunday night through Monday night.
