New AVIATION, MARINE

SYNOPSIS
Issued at 1227 AM PDT Sun Apr 28 2024

High pressure brings quiet weather and slowly warming temperatures this week. Breezy onshore winds will keep temperatures along the coast cooler however.

UPDATE
Issued at 835 AM PDT Sun Apr 28 2024

Sunday morning is beginning much the same way as Saturday morning weatherwise - breezy onshore winds and a broken up marine layer.
Onshore winds are leading to gusty conditions around the Bay Area and Central Coast, especially the immediate coastline and higher peaks. Notable gusts: Pt Reyes 44 mph, Mt Tam 37 mph, Mt Umunhum 31 mph, and Bigrock Ridge 38 mph. As for clouds, broken stratus layer piling up once again on terrain features along the coast: Pt Reyes, San Mateo coast, and Monterey Peninsula. Additionally, the stronger onshore flow resulted in clouds over the Berkeley Hills and Livermore area and the Salinas Valley.

Clouds along the immediate coast will struggle to completely clear today, especially along San Mateo and Monterey. Inland areas will see ample sunshine this afternoon with a nice spring day.

No update needed...

SHORT TERM
(Today and tonight)
Issued at 1227 AM PDT Sun Apr 28 2024

High pressure will remain offshore as a weak cold front slowly dissipates across the Bay Area today. The pressure gradient will remain relatively robust, thus supporting breezy northerly winds today particularly over the local waters and along the coast. Patches of stratus will again develop within marine influenced areas before mixing out during the late morning to early afternoon hours. High temperatures will range from around 60 on the beaches to the mid 70s for the warmest portions of interior Monterey County and for areas bordering the Sacramento Valley. Lows tonight will dip into the 40s

LONG TERM
(Sunday night through next Saturday)
Issued at 245 PM PDT Sat Apr 27 2024

Longwave pattern shows more zonal flow setting up through at least midweek. Zonal flow aloft will keep more of the same: subtle warming (inland areas), dry conditions, patchy night and morning stratus, and breezy onshore flow. Speaking of winds, probabilistic guidance really highlights northerly winds over the coastal waters Monday and Tuesday. Current forecast has trended upward with regards to winds as well. Still not strong enough for a wind advisory for the coast, but gusts of 40mph plus will possible.
Probably not the best beach days for Monday/Tuesday. Elsewhere away from the coast there is a high likelihood (greater than 70%)
of seeing gusts over 25 mph.

The second half of the work week will feature additional warming with far interior location eclipsing 80 degrees. Still breezy out of the NW so temperatures will hold mostly steady along the coast and bays. The warm up and breezy NW flow finally ease next weekend as the zonal flow becomes more amplified with approaching upper trough.

AVIATION
(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 1040 AM PDT Sun Apr 28 2024

Morning MVFR/IFR cigs continue to dissipate with KSFO the only one still showing a cig. The bigger story through the taf period will be the winds. Stronger onshore flow will keep gusty winds in place. VFR tonight with the exception of a few cigs impacting KMRY and KSNS late tonight through early Monday.

Vicinity of SFO...Classic pesky feed situation for KSFO as cigs spill over the runway. Did amend taf early for cigs through 18Z.
Latest meso vis satellite finally shows a thinning of the feed with cigs staying closer to the gap. Winds are strong out of the NW with gusts close to 35 kts this afternoon. The sustained winds will likely impact runway pattern on the 01s due to strong crosswind. AWW criteria will be very close, but for now gusts to 34 kts in the taf.

SFO Bridge Approach...No impact from cigs. SKC. Still dealing with gusty NW winds through approach zone.

Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR for now. Will need to keep an eye out for developing cigs through the afternoon for KMRY as strong NW flow piles up over the peninsula. Do have cigs returning late tonight.

MARINE
(Today through Friday)
Issued at 1040 AM PDT Sun Apr 28 2024

High pressure over the Eastern Pacific and low pressure inland will maintain strong northerly winds over the coastal waters and bays today. Winds will be strongest over the outer waters and along the Big Sur coast. The strong winds will produce fresh steep wind waves and hazardous conditions. Moderate period northwesterly swell will continue to move through the waters through Thursday causing wave heights up to 12 feet.
