area forecast discussion
national weather service san francisco bay area
329 pm pst Sun feb 17 2019

Synopsis Scattered showers will continue through this afternoon
mainly south of the san francisco bay area. Clearing skies will
allow for cold minimum temperatures tonight and into the upcoming
week. Dry weather is expected for Monday and Tuesday with a
slight chance of showers returning by the middle of the week.

Temperatures will remain below normal.

Discussion As of 2:00 pm pst Sunday... Upper level low over
nevada is bringing a cold northerly flow to the area. Scattered
showers have developed over the higher terrain from the east bay
hills south. A couple of spotters have reported small hail in the
santa cruz mountains. Precip could still fall as snow above 3000
feet.

These showers will be ending tonight as drier air aloft moves
into the area. As skies clear and winds decrease patchy fog is
possible in the north bay valleys. Lows tonight will be dropping
into the mid to upper 20s in the coldest interior valleys with
mid to upper 30s around the bay. An upper level ridge moving over
the area will bring dry weather Monday and Tuesday. The airmass
will start to moderate but lower humidities will allow for another
cold night Monday night with temperatures similar to Sunday
night. Highs Monday and Tuesday will be in the 50s across the
lowlands which is still about 5 degrees below normal.

The next upper level trough will drop into the pacific northwest
on Wednesday. This system is further inland than the previous
systems that have moved through here so it will have less moisture
to work with. Only a slight chance of showers is forecast with any
rain amounts under one-tenth of an inch. It will bring in a
reinforcement of cold air so snow levels will be very low again.

Thursday and Friday look to be dry as there is good model
agreement. The flow will become more westerly which should put an
end to our cold wave. Medium range models indicate a system from
the west possibly affecting our area late next weekend.

Aviation As of 03:29 pm pst Sunday... For 00z tafs. Scattered
showers to remain in the vicinity until this evening. After that,
dry conditions expected through the rest of the forecast period.

Vfr prevailing with the exception of possible patchy fog in the
morning in the north bay. Sct to bkn CIGS will continue into this
evening between 3500-5000 ft agl. Skies expected to gradually
clear overnight and through tomorrow morning. Gusty onshore winds
continue this afternoon and into the early evening with gusts
generally around 20-25 kt with isolated gusts up to 30 kt. Winds
forecast to subside overnight.

Vicinity of ksfo...VFR prevailing with sct to bkn CIGS 3500-5000
ft into this evening before conditions are expected to gradually
clear through the morning. Showers to diminish this evening.

Breezy westerly winds into the early evening with gusts 20-25 kt
and isolated gusts up to 30 kt. Winds forecast to ease overnight.

Sfo bridge approach... Similar to sfo.

Monterey bay terminals...VFR with scattered showers into this
evening. Sct-bkn cogs 3,500-5,000 ft agl this afternoon and
evening. Onshore winds remain breezy with gusts 20-25 kt. Winds
forecast to ease overnight and turn more SE by the early morning.

Marine As of 02:18 pm pst Sunday... Moderate and gusty winds
are forecast to prevail over the coastal waters through the
evening hours and overnight. The northwest swell that arrived late
Friday and Saturday will continue to gradually diminish
overnight. A second long period northwest swell train is set to
arrive during the week and will bring with it more modest swell
heights.

There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. These are not intended to be fact, they are my opinions. 4) Small programs that generate result presented on a web page. Like any computer program, these may and in some cases do have errors. Almost all of these also make simplifying assumptions so they are not totally accurate even if there are no errors. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
