national weather service san francisco bay area

Synopsis Generally quiet weather is expected for the bay area
over the next several days. Mostly sunny conditions prevail today
as low-level clouds continue to travel southward allowing skies to
clear along the coast, but the stratus can be expected to return
overnight for southern counties. Temperatures continue a cooling
trend today through Thursday. Warmer temperatures can be expected
at the end of the work week and through the weekend; however, they
are still expected to be cooler than seasonal averages.

Discussion As of 1:43 pm pdt Tuesday... An upper level trough
is currently over the north pacific ocean and traveling east
towards the pacific northwest. This passing of the trough to our
north is what is driving the consistent onshore winds as well as
the recent cooling trend. As the trough axis approaches Wednesday,
temperatures in inland areas, particularly interior the north and
east bays could see temperatures drop by as much as 10 degrees.

High temperatures are expected to continue to decrease on Thursday
as well, but not nearly as dramatically.

Breezy northerly winds off the coast have helped mix the marine
layer and leave mostly sunny skies across the area, with a few high
level cirrus clouds moving east. The marine layer is expected to
return overnight; however, it looks as be limited to confine itself
mostly to south of the santa cruz mountains.

Late in the week and into Friday, the upper level trough tries to
lift towards british columbia allowing for high pressure to build
back into the region along with warmer temperatures. The magnitude
of this warming is still uncertain due to model disagreement. The
gfs has the trough lifting out quicker which could mean a much
warmer trend for the bay area; however, the euro shows the upper low
become more stationary and lingers in the pacific northwest, which
could provide cooler conditions.

Aviation As of 4:40 pm pdt Tuesday... Low clouds have cleared
away from the coast this afternoon. Onshore flow is northwesterly
with a fairly robust north-south component. This is evident by a 4
pm METAR report of north winds gusting to 25 kt at sts. This
should be enough to keep stratus out of the sfo bay area tonight.

Stratus should be confined to the coast where ifr CIGS area
expected at mry and sns after 04z.

Vicinity of ksfo... RemainingVFR. W to NW winds increasing 15-18
kt with gusts to 25 kt decreasing after 04z.

Sfo bridge approach... Similar to ksfo.

Monterey bay terminals... Ifr after 04z possibly later.

Marine As of 04:28 pm pdt Tuesday... Gusty northwest winds will
gradually diminish over the norther outer waters through tonight.

However, gusty winds will persist along the big sur coast south of
point sur and during the afternoon hours over the coastal gaps and
bays. These winds will generate steep fresh swell resulting in
hazardous conditions over the waters, particularly for smaller
vessels. Expect northwest winds to re-strengthen later this week.

NOTE: East coast views moved to GEOS-16. They are experimental and not well supported by NOAA so they may not be correct so be warned. This change required redoing a large amount of the GOES code. If the image you are expecting is not showing, please let me know. You may need to use the EDIT function to update your location.

There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. If you have questions on these, please contact the author. 3) Articles that represent my personal opinions. These are intended to promote thought and for entertainment. These are not intended to be fact, they are my opinions. 4) Small programs that generate result presented on a web page. Like any computer program, these may and in some cases do have errors. Almost all of these also make simplifying assumptions so they are not totally accurate even if there are no errors. Please verify all results. 5) Weather information is from numerious of sources and is presented automatically. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
