area forecast discussion
national weather service san francisco bay area
126 pm pdt Mon mar 27 2017

Synopsis Breezy conditions will continue tonight as a ridge of
high pressure builds into our region. Slightly cooler conditions
are expected on Thursday as a weather system moves into eastern
california and nevada. That weather system will bring only a
slight chance of showers to the northern and eastern portions of
our area, and also result in blustery conditions near the coast
and in the hills by late Thursday. High pressure will redevelop
late in the week and result in warmer weather once again by the
weekend.

Discussion As of 1:30 pm pdt Monday... Outside of some fair
weather cumulus that have popped up along terrain, mostly sunny
conditions across our cwa. Main story has been the winds as a
moderate surface gradient (acv to sfo now 2.4 mb and sfo to las is
over 15) has lead to breezy northwesterly winds. Current
observations indicate gusts of 15 to 25 mph in many location with
a few spots over 30 mph. Winds will continue through the evening
before dissipating overnight.

Synoptically a ridge of high pressure will build into our region
over the next couple of days. This will lead to dry weather along
with warmer temperatures. Highs will return to the mid 60s to
upper 70s on Wednesday with a few lower 80s possible in monterey
county
an inside slider will dive down across nevada on Thursday and to
the four corners region on Friday. Although the track will keep
almost all of the showers to our east, there remains a slight
chance a few could hit the north and east bay hills on Thursday.

The bigger impact will be to bring another round of cooler weather
plus breezy northwesterly winds. Both the NAM and ECMWF bring the
strongest winds to the coast and offshore locations while inland
areas have lower values. Right now wind advisories look unlikely
expect for potentially along the coast and coastal ranges.

Temperatures will be 5 to 10 degrees cooler for our entire region
compared to Wednesday.

The ridge will rebuild Friday into Saturday which will lead to
temperatures retuning back to near normal values. That should hold
through at least the first part of next week.

Finally, CPC 8 to 14 day forecast does show normal to above normal
rainfall for our region. We will have to keep a close an eye on
the longer range guidance. Winter may not be done yet!

Aviation As of 10:45 am pdt Monday... For 18z tafs. West to
northwest winds will continue to increase through late morning and
become gusty at times through the afternoon. With this flow,
few/sct clouds will likely remain over or in the vicnity of the
terminals as well. However,VFR conditions are likely through the
forecast period. Wind speeds diminish late this evening and into
the overnight before increasing once again late Tuesday
morning/afternoon.

Vicinity of ksfo...VFR. ExpectingVFR conditions to prevail with
winds becoming gusty later this morning and persisting through the
afternoon. Gusts in excess of 25 kts will be likely.

Sfo bridge approach... Similar to ksfo.

Monterey bay terminals...VFR. ExpectingVFR conditions to prevail
with increased northwesterly winds this afternoon. Wind gusts of
20 to 25 kts will be possible at times through the afternoon and
then diminish late in the evening/overnight.

Marine As of 10:45 am pdt Monday... Northwest winds will
increase this afternoon and persist through midweek as a strong
surface pressure gradient builds over the region. In addition, a
building northwest swell will move through the coastal waters
through midweek. Moderate to gusty northwest winds will then
likely continue through late week.

There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. If you have questions on these, please contact the author. 3) Articles that represent my personal opinions. These are intended to promote thought and for entertainment. These are not intended to be fact, they are my opinions. 4) Small programs that generate result presented on a web page. Like any computer program, these may and in some cases do have errors. Almost all of these also make simplifying assumptions so they are not totally accurate even if there are no errors. Please verify all results. 5) Weather information is from numerious of sources and is presented automatically. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
