Synopsis for the central california coast and bays including the Monterey bay..Greater farallones...and cordell bank national marine sanctuaries... Moderate to locally strong northerly winds will prevail over the coastal waters today as high pressure remains over the eastern pacific. Gusty winds will generate steep wind waves creating hazardous sea conditions, especially for smaller vessels. Winds will then diminish late this week as the high pressure weakens and the thermal trough shifts towards the coast.

national weather service san francisco bay area

Synopsis A warming and drying trend will begin over the region
today and continue into Thursday as onshore flow weakens. Gusty
northerly winds in higher elevations will result in enhanced fire
weather concerns from tonight into Thursday morning, primarily in
the hills of eastern napa county. Temperatures moderate slightly
over the upcoming weekend but will remain near to slightly above
seasonal averages.

Discussion As of 03:18 am pdt Wednesday... Onshore flow and
cooler conditions aloft have resulted in cooler conditions over
the region this morning. Low clouds have developed from the san
mateo coastline down into the monterey bay and into much of the
salinas valley. Meanwhile, cloud cover is much less extensive over
the greater san francisco bay area this morning. As the main
mid upper level trough stretched along the west coast shifts
inland today, conditions are forecast to clear by late morning or
early afternoon. Onshore flow is also forecast to diminish and
allow for a gradual warming trend in wake of the exiting trough.

This warming trend will continue into Thursday with inland areas
reaching into the 80s and 90s while coastal areas warm into the 60s
and 70s. In addition, offshore flow is forecast to develop in the
higher elevations across the region tonight into Thursday afternoon.

The strongest winds are likely to occur in the hills of eastern napa
county where northerly wind gusts of 35 mph will be possible late
tonight into Thursday morning. These wind speeds combined with a
very dry air mass will likely create critical fire weather
conditions, especially in the higher elevations of napa county.

Thus, a fire weather watch remains in effect.

The warming trend is forecast to moderate by Friday as a weak
mid upper level trough develops off of the pacific northwest coast.

However, inland temperatures are forecast to remain above seasonal
averages while slightly cooler conditions persist near the coast as
a result of weak onshore flow. The previously forecast cooling trend
through the weekend appears less likely now as the forecast models
indicate a lower amplitude trough staying to our north this weekend.

Regardless, the warming trend is still forecast to peak on Thursday
with offshore flow in the hills diminishing late in the week and
into the upcoming weekend.

There continues to be differences in the medium range models heading
into early next week with respect to the mid upper level pattern
over the region. At this time, look for seasonably warm autumn
weather across the region early next week. Dry weather conditions
are also forecast to prevail through the entire forecast period.

Aviation As of 04:28 am pdt Wednesday... For 12z tafs.

Satellite imagery showing patchy stratus around the san mateo
coast, part of the east bay, and over the monterey bay area.

Expecting clearing between 16z-18z.VFR conditions this afternoon
and evening. Most sites expected to remainVFR through the period
aside from possible stratus development tonight for the monterey
taf sites. Onshore winds this afternoon 10-15 kt.

Vicinity of ksfo...VFR, possibility that the terminal could be
occasionally affected this morning by periodic MVFR cigs. Onshore
winds this afternoon around 15 kt.

Sfo bridge approach... .Clouds may move into the approach from the
east bay through late this morning.

Monterey bay terminals... .Ifr CIGS to continue through around
18z-19z.VFR this afternoon and evening. Chance of low cigs
returning tonight, but confidence is low. Onshore winds this
afternoon 10-15 kt.

Marine As of 03:18 am pdt Wednesday... Interaction between high
pressure over the eastern pacific and a thermal trough over
inland california will maintain gusty northwest winds across the
coastal waters through Thursday. Gusty winds will generate steep
wind waves creating hazardous sea conditions, especially for
smaller vessels. Winds will then diminish late this week as the
high pressure weakens and the thermal trough shifts towards the
coast.
