area forecast discussion
national weather service san francisco bay area
932 pm pst Thu nov 15 2018

Synopsis Widespread smoke and haze will continue to result in
poor air quality over much of the san francisco bay area through
the weekend. Otherwise, dry weather with mild temperatures are
forecast to persist through early next week. A significant
pattern change appears likely starting around the middle of next
week, with the potential for widespread periodic rainfall during
the second half of the week.

Discussion As of 9:15 pm pst Thursday... Smoke from the camp
fire continues to be the primary concern in the short-term.

Visibilities across the san francisco bay area this evening range
from 1 to 3 miles in haze and smoke. The weather pattern over the
next few days will not be conducive to improving air quality as
winds will remain light and a low level inversion will continue
to trap smoke near the surface. Latest hrrr smoke model indicates
very little change in near-surface smoke concentrations across our
region through at least tomorrow evening.

Very little change is expected in our weather through the weekend
and into the early part of next week. The upper ridge located over
the west coast, which is responsible for our stagnant airmass,
will continue to maintain dry weather. Daytime temperatures will
remain slightly warmer than seasonal averages while nights will
stay rather cool.

Forecast confidence is increasing regarding a potential pattern
change later next week. An initial system approaching from the
eastern pacific is forecast to split well offshore and miss our
area entirely as it approaches the west coast around Tuesday of
next week. Thereafter things look more promising with both the
gfs and ECMWF indicating at least a couple of systems bringing
widespread rainfall to our area during the second half of next
week and into the following weekend. Rain is forecast to arrive
on or about Wednesday. The timing of subsequent systems is hard to
pin down due to model differences, but the good news is that
there is growing confidence that our region will not only see
much needed rainfall by thanksgiving, but much improved air
quality as well.

Aviation As of 09:32 pm pst Thursday... For 06z tafs. Widespread
smoke continues to impact the region, particularly around the sf
bay area terminals. Most sites are still at MVFR ifr conditions
due to reduced vis. Do not expect much improvement in smoke
through the period. MVFR ifr vis will continue through the period
with occasional MVFR cigs. Slant range vis issues will also
persist and impact arrivals. Smoke impacts may remain an issue
until the next storm system, which right now looks like mid to
late next week. Generally light winds through the period.

Vicinity of ksfo... MVFR ifr vis with MVFR CIGS due to wildfire
smoke. Earlier run of the hrrr smoke model suggests there may be
some improvement over ksfo tomorrow evening. However, given that
there is expected to be little change in the overall weather
pattern, any improvement in conditions is likely to be temporary.

Winds will remain light becoming onshore again in the afternoon.

Sfo bridge approach... Similar to terminal.

Monterey bay terminals... MVFR vis to prevail due to wildfire smoke with
occasions ofVFR. Southerly winds into late tomorrow morning
before turning onshore by the afternoon.

Marine As of 8:16 pm pst Thursday... Generally light to
moderate northerly winds will continue over the coastal waters
into the weekend. Locally breezy winds can be expected near
coastal gaps and at favored coastal jet locations during the
afternoon and evening hours. A mixed moderate northwest swell and
light southerly swell will also persist.

Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
