area forecast discussion
national weather service san francisco bay area
932 am pdt Fri may 24 2019

Synopsis Mainly dry conditions are forecast through Saturday,
along with continued cooler than normal temperatures.

Unseasonably cool and unsettled conditions are forecast to develop
later in the weekend as a system drops in from the north, with
scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms possible on Sunday.

Dry weather should return by memorial day, but temperatures will
remain cool into early next week.

Discussion As of 9:32 am pdt Friday... Low clouds blanket much
of the san francisco bay area this morning. The few locations
without cloud cover this morning include parts of the santa clara
valley as well as the southern stretches of the salinas valley.

1-minute goes-west visible imagery even is capturing a well-
defined circulation in the marine stratus off the coast of point
reyes (check out our twitter feed for the loop). Temperatures are
generally running within a few or several degrees of what they
were at this time 24 hours ago, though santa rosa is an exception
to this where it is presently running 6 degrees cooler (largely
thanks to this morning's clouds). High temperatures will be
similar to what we saw yesterday: 60s along the coast and 70s for
inland communities. No plans to make any updates to the short-term
grids at this time. For additional forecast details, please refer
to the previous discussion section.

Prev discussion As of 3:38 am pdt Friday... The shower activity
from last evening has ended, although moderate drizzle is
occuring along the coast, especially around the monterey
peninsula. Aside from this coastal drizzle in the morning, today
is expected to be dry with more Sun and slightly warmer
temperatures compared to yesterday. Similar conditions are
expected on Saturday.

Another upper low center is then forecast to affect the area on
Sunday as it drops south along the coast. Models are coming into
better agreement concerning the placement of this low, and it is
looking pretty plausible to see showers once again on Sunday.

Latest guidance focuses the main area of precip over the southern
and western-most portions of the district, mainly from marin
county south. In addition to showers, there is the potential for
isolated thunderstorms on Sunday, again mainly across the southern
half of our forecast area, closer to the upper low center.

Rainfall totals with this weekend's system will depend on the
exact track of the system and how far west the low tracks. Snow
levels will also depend upon the track of the low center. The
latest forecast keeps snow levels above 5000 feet, so any snow
fall would occur over the highest peaks in the santa lucias.

Temperatures on Sunday are forecast to be as much as 20 degrees
below normal.

The upper low is forecast to move well off to the southeast of
our area by Monday. Thus, dry weather is expected to return by
memorial day. Temperatures will warm slightly on Monday, but still
remain well below normal. Cool conditions are expected through the
remainder of the week as a broad upper level trough remains over
the west.

Aviation As of 5:05 am pdt Friday... Southerly to
southwesterly flow continues along the coast. Downsloping has kept
sfo and sjc inVFR overnight while other sites are experiencing
MVFR cigs. Satellite indicates little expansion of the stratus in
the past few hours with a large hole in the stratus advecting up
the coast from the south west of monterey bay. Southerly flow
expected to weaken this morning and turn westerly by this
afternoon. Southerly flow may keep sts in MVFR CIGS into the early
afternoon while sfo and sjc may see predominantlyVFR through the
morning and into the afternoon. Expecting onshore winds of 10-15
kt this afternoon at most sites.

Vicinity of ksfo...VFR most likely to prevail over the terminal
through the morning. Stratus over oak has shown little westward
expansion towards sfo overnight. If southerly flow weakens may see
a brief period of MVFR CIGS this morning. Light southerly winds
will turn westerly 10-15 kt this afternoon.

Sfo bridge approach... Similar to ksfo.

Monterey bay terminals... MVFR CIGS this morning with occasional
drizzle possible. Latest satellite trends a hole in the stratus
and drier air moving north along the coast. Some of this drier air
may work its way into the terminals and cause an earlier burn off
of stratus than indicated in the taf. Will continue to monitor
this development.

Marine As of 8:17 am pdt Friday... Southerly flow will prevail
near the coast and with northerly flow over the outer waters
today. Low pressure will move inland over the great basin Friday
night through the weekend and lead to gusty northwest winds over
the coastal waters. Moderate northwest swell will continue through
the weekend with steep fresh swell generated by the gusty winds.

I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. These are not intended to be fact, they are my opinions. 4) Small programs that generate result presented on a web page. Like any computer program, these may and in some cases do have errors. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
