Moderate southerly winds will continue into the morning ahead of an approaching cold front. Winds will decrease and switch to the northwest behind the frontal passage. Small craft advisories remain in place mainly due to hazardous sea conditions caused by swell. SWells will gradually decrease today and Tuesday. The next frontal system is set to arrive mid-week bringing back southerly winds and increasing northwest swell.

Synopsis Rain will continue to spread across the san francisco
bay area overnight, with highest rainfall amounts expected in the
north bay. Light rain may develop as far south as the monterey bay
area by late tonight. Rain will taper off and end on Monday. Dry
and mild weather is forecast for Tuesday. The next system is
forecast to bring soaking rains and locally gusty winds to the
entire region on Wednesday. Scattered showers will follow into
Thursday, with dry weather expected by Friday and into next
weekend.

Discussion As of 9:05 pm pst Sunday... A frontal boundary is
sagging slowly southward through northern california this evening.

Rainfall thus far has been almost entirely confined to the north
bay, with most locations so far picking up a quarter of an inch
of less. The exception is venado in northwest sonoma county where
nearly 1.5 inches has accumulated since late afternoon.

Latest hrrr and WRF models indicate that rain will gradually
spread as far south as santa cruz and santa clara counties
overnight, with the WRF also forecasting light rain to develop
into northern monterey and san benito counties on Monday morning.

Both models indicate that the most substantial rainfall will be
confined to the north bay where rain totals of up to 2 inches are
forecast by Monday morning in the mountains of western sonoma and
marin counties. Rainfall amounts through Monday morning from san
francisco and oakland southward are generally forecast to be a
half inch or less, except along portions of the san francisco
peninsula where the WRF forecasts up to an inch of rain. Rain
rates overnight are expected to mostly be light to moderate,
except in the north bay where brief periods of heavy rain are
forecast to occur, particularly along the western slopes of the
coastal mountains in sonoma and marin counties.

Across the burn scars in sonoma and napa counties, the latest wrf
and hrrr models forecast maximum rain rates of about a quarter
inch per hour. Rain rates are expected to peak across the burn
scars between about midnight and 4 am. Rain totals across the burn
scar areas by Monday morning are projected to be anywhere form a
half inch to an inch and a quarter. Rainfall will mostly end in
the north bay by sunrise Monday. Father south, periods of rain
will persist through the morning with a few isolated showers
possibly lingering into the afternoon hours. Most of our forecast
area should see dry weather return by Monday afternoon.

Dry and mild weather is then forecast to persist through Tuesday
and Tuesday night as a shortwave ridge temporarily develops over
california.

The models have been consistent in bringing a relatively robust
system through our area on Wednesday, forecasting a strong cold
front to sweep across our entire forecast area, starting in the
north bay around sunrise Wednesday and reaching the southern end
of our area by Wednesday evening. This midweek system will
generate more uniform rainfall distribution across our area
compared to the current system. Also, a period of heavy rain is
likely just ahead of and along the cold front. But since the
Wednesday system is forecast to move through quickly, overall rain
totals are not expected to exceed 2 inches. Most areas are
currently projected to pick up between 0.5 and 1.5 inches. In
addition, locally gusty southerly winds are expected prior to cold
frontal passage on Wednesday. Scattered showers will likely
continue into Thursday.

A recent forecast update included lowering of rainfall chances
across the southern portion of our area on Wednesday morning.

Longer range models forecast dry weather returning by late next
week and continuing through next weekend as a longwave ridge
develops across the west.

Aviation As of 03:34 am pst Monday... For 12z tafs. Kmux radar
still shows showers moving through the sf bay area. MVFR cigs
expected to continue through late this afternoon. Any lingering
heavier showers may temporarily reduce vis to MVFR as well.

Showers should be out of the north bay sf bay areas by around
18 20z. CIGS are expected to raise briefly toVFR late this
afternoon and this evening before lowering once again tonight.

Vicinity of ksfo... MVFR CIGS with showers currently passing
through. Conditions improving after 18z becomingVFR after 22z.

Southeast winds 5-10 kt becoming west after 20-22z.

Sfo bridge approach... Similar to ksfo.

Monterey bay terminals... Currently MVFR at kmry withVFR CIGS at
ksns. Borderline MVFRVFR conditions through this afternoon. Some
light rain periodically from 12z-18z.

Marine As of 02:21 am pst Monday... Moderate southerly winds
will continue into the morning ahead of an approaching cold front.
