Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 201 AM PDT Sun Apr 28 2024

Synopsis
Mild and dry weather in store with breezy winds early next week.

Clear skies continue overnight and early this morning. Today begins our dry stretch of weather with no accumulating precipitation in the short term forecast. Afternoon highs today will be in the mid to upper 70s across the Valley and 60s and 50s across the foothills and mountains respectively. This will be the general temperature pattern through early next week with Wednesday showing as the warmest day over the next several days.

Ensembles continue to depict an upper-level low digging into the Pacific NW and a high pressure system in the Pacific through early next week. This will keep Northern CA in a dry and quiet weather period. Winds will be breezy (up to 15-30 MPH) Monday and Tuesday, strongest in the morning north of Sacramento and across portions of the Northern San Joaquin. NBM probabilities show a 15-40% chance of gusts exceeding 30 MPH each morning with higher chances on Monday. On Wednesday, ensembles show trough digging into the Great Basin which enhance northerly flow through the Valley and see wind gusts 20-35 MPH, strongest along I-5 north of Sacramento. EC Ensemble meteograms support this showing 25-35 MPH wind gusts Wednesday morning and afternoon. NBM probabilities for winds stronger than 35 MPH Wednesday late morning is a 20-40% chance, so no major impacts are expected. Be sure to sure loose outdoor items this week and be cautious if operating a high profile vehicle through wind prone areas.

.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Thursday THROUGH Sunday)...

As we start to move into the later parts of next week, off-shore upper level ridging is forecast to build and pave the way for continued dry and warm weather. Cluster analysis still reveals forecast uncertainty regarding upper level ridging dominating or a more zonal flow regime over the area as we continue to move through the week. The NBM is favoring dry and warm weather over the area currently through Friday with low-precipitation chances returning next weekend.

AVIATION

VFR conditions next 24 hours. Surface wind gusts generally less than 12 kts.
