Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 110 PM PDT Sun May 12 2024

SYNOPSIS
Seasonably warm weather will result in areas of moderate heat risk continuing into the week ahead. A few isolated, late day showers or storms will be possible over the Sierra through Tuesday. Otherwise, mostly dry and breezy conditions look to accompany this warm stretch as well.

.DISCUSSION(Through Wednesday)...
Quiet weather prevails once again across interior NorCal this afternoon, with 70s to 80s currently across the Valley and foothills and 60s to 70s over the mountains. High temperatures will continue to climb through the afternoon, with widespread high temperatures in the 90s in the Valley and 70s to 80s at higher elevations by the end of the day. Generally light south to west winds are expected for much of the area through the remainder of the day, although some southwesterly gusts to 25 mph will be possible in the Delta vicinity later today. An isolated shower or storm cannot be completely ruled out over the Sierra late this afternoon into the early evening, but current chances sit around 5% to 15%.

Moving into Monday, while upper level ridging will remain the predominant feature aloft for interior NorCal, a secondary trough looks to move inland across SoCal. Overall impacts for NorCal will be a slight cool down on the order of 3 to 5 degrees for Monday afternoon high temperatures, as well as a more appreciable (15% to 30%) chance for isolated showers and thunderstorms to develop along the Sierra from around I-80 southward in the afternoon and evening.
Resultant HeatRisk looks to generally diminish below moderate on Monday. As the SoCal trough progresses eastward into Tuesday, isolated, late day shower and thunderstorm chances will remain along the Sierra south of I-80, with high temperatures inching upward and areas of moderate HeatRisk returning to Valley locations yet again. While winds are still expected to remain light, they do look to shift to a more northerly direction on Tuesday, resulting in a drying trend through midweek.

The upper level ridge then looks to gain a firmer grasp over interior NorCal on Wednesday, with the hottest temperatures of the year so far expected by Wednesday afternoon. Latest ensemble guidance continues to indicate 35% to 75% probabilities of reaching triple digits throughout the Sacramento Valley, with highest probabilities (>50% chance) currently for areas between the Sacramento metro and Redding. This will result in fairly widespread areas of moderate HeatRisk for Valley and foothills locations north of the Sacramento metro. Northerly winds look to be a bit breezier on Wednesday as well, with some gusts around 20 to 25 mph possible at times. Strongest winds are expected across the northern Sacramento Valley at this time.

.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Thursday THROUGH Sunday)...

Broad upper level ridging will continue to influence interior NorCal through the end of the week. Although, ensemble guidance does continue to suggest that a trough ejecting from the Gulf of Alaska toward the northern Plains across the late week period will work to flatten the ridge. While Thursday will still see seasonably warm high temperatures with areas of moderate HeatRisk, a gradual cool down will then be possible from Friday into the weekend, with moderate HeatRisk areas diminishing. There is also a signal for a closed low approaching California in some capacity late in the weekend. This may result in additional cooling and possibly some renewed chances for precipitation as well, but details remain rather uncertain at this time.

AVIATION

Generally VFR conditions prevail across interior NorCal through the forecast period, although some MVFR/IFR possible in any isolated showers/storms that develop over the Sierra (5% to 15% chance) after 21z. Light surface winds less than 12 kts expected, except southwesterly gusts to 20 kts in the Delta vicinity after 00z.
