national weather service san francisco bay area
404 pm pst Tue dec 18 2018

Synopsis High surf advisories continue today. Otherwise a weak
warm front will bring cloudiness and light rain to the far north
bay. A drying trend Wednesday and Thursday is forecast for all
areas before the next weak front brings some light rain, mainly
to the north bay Thursday night. Drying trend returns Friday and
Saturday before rain chances increase Sunday into Monday.

Discussion As of 1:02 pm pst Tuesday... A storm system with
primary impacts in oregon and washington state continues to brush
the north bay this early afternoon. Parts of sonoma county have
been reporting some off on light rainfall over the past several
hours, with total rain amounts generally under a tenth of an inch.

Visible satellite imagery as of lunchtime shows the overcast
conditions blanketing the golden gate and points north, while
partly cloudy to clear conditions have prevailed from about half
moon bay and points south. As the afternoon progresses expect
temperatures to rise to the mid upper 50s across the north bay,
and as warming up to the middle 60s in the southern reaches of
monterey county. These values generally fall within several
degrees of middle december climatological normals.

Over the next 24 hours an upper level ridge will build off the
southern california coast, allowing rather tranquil weather to
prevail over the san francisco bay area and central california
coast. Can't rule out the chance of some localized fog overnight
and into Wednesday morning in the usual development locations: the
north bay valleys around santa rosa and napa, interior east bay
around livermore, and the far southern salinas valley. More of the
same is forecast on Thursday with dry conditions expected to
continue.

The next opportunity for wet weather will late Thursday and into
Friday as a weak frontal system approaches the northern
california coast. At this time, the favored locations for
receiving any sort of rainfall will be for the north bay. Rain
amounts look to be fairly minimal, but enough to create wet
roadways across parts of marin, sonoma, and napa counties. The 12z
nam extends the rain chances a bit farther south than the ecmwf
and GFS solutions, so will have to keep a close eye over the
coming days to see if rain chances need to be increased for san
francisco and locations south.

The progressive weather pattern will last into the weekend with
both the GFS and ECMWF indicating another system arriving around
Sunday. Like the preceeding systems, this one will again favor
locations north of the golden gate. A better shot widespread wet
weather will come around Tuesday or Wednesday next week. Still
some uncertainty at this point in time, but nonetheless worth
monitoring model trends over the coming days.

Aviation As of 03:55 pm pst Tuesday... Currently TAF sites
split with clouds north of the golden gate andVFR south. High
clouds will stream ahead of a frontal system with generally light
winds. There is a possibility of low clouds, developing between
09-15z Wednesday over the northern portion of the region. This may
result in MVFR, or locally lower, conditions early Wednesday
morning for these locations. Confidence is low to moderate beyond
06z Wednesday.

Vicinity of ksfo...VFR conditions and light winds early. MVFR
conditions developing anytime after 06z, but conf is moderate.

Sfo bridge approach... Similar to ksfo... Some patchy low clouds
possible over the approach tomorrow morning..

Monterey bay terminals...VFR conditions and light winds.

Beaches As of 09:45 am pst Tuesday... Hazardous beach
conditions will persist along the shoreline through this afternoon
as a large, long period northwest swell continues to gradually
subside. Breakers of 15 to 25 feet will remain possible, locally
larger at favored break points along the coast. In addition, large
wave run up is possible along the coast, particularly during high
tide. As a result, a high surf advisory remains in effect through
this afternoon. A different large, long period northwest swell
train will move into the waters late Wednesday into Thursday with
forerunners arriving earlier in the day Wednesday producing
increased risk of sneaker waves. Do not turn your back on the
ocean and stay aware of your surroundings if visiting the coast.

Marine As of 03:52 pm pst Tuesday... Locally gusty northwest
winds will continue along the big sur coast through this evening.

A weak frontal boundary stalled over the region will result in
light and variable winds across the northern waters and light
northerly winds over the southern waters through Wednesday.

Another large long-period swell will build Wednesday before
subsiding Thursday. Hazardous sea conditions will also continue
through Thursday.

It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases.
