Synopsis
Mountain snow impacting travel today, mainly in the morning.

Valley rain with afternoon thunderstorms possible, north of i80.

Dry Sunday, followed by more rain and mountain snow early Monday
into early Tuesday. A stronger storm is possible late Tuesday
through Wednesday.

Discussion
Pacific upper level trough is moving onshore with surface cold
front pushing across the area, bringing a broad band of moderate
to heavy rain and mountain snow. Snow levels are around 4500-5000
feet. Blue canyon airport at 3 am was 32 f with heavy snow (5280
feet). Caltrans reported 2" of new snow at their kingvale
maintenance yard on i80 at 6200 feet (midnight to 3 am). A winter
weather advisory continues through 5 pm pdt this evening. The
heaviest snow is expected through the morning hours, though, with
the hrrr model showing 1 to 2 inches an hour at times.

Scattered mountain snow showers are expected in the afternoon,
gradually winding down by evening. Rain in the valley will
diminish behind the main precipitation band later this morning,
but there is a slight chance of valley and foothill thunderstorms
this afternoon. The best potential is north of i80, where cold air
aloft with the trough combined with some surface heating from
sunlight will bring the best instability. Shear looks limited, so
strong storms are not expected. The northern san joaquin valley
and delta areas should be trendin dry by afternoon.

An upper-level short-wave ridging moving in behind the trough on
Sunday will result in a dry day with warmer daytime highs. Sunday
will have good travel weather through the day, but the next storm
system is forecast to move in Sunday night and continue through
Monday night. This system looks a little wetter than the current
system, especially north of i80. Snow amounts over the nortehrn
sierra could reach around a foot, up to 2 feet over the western
plumas county mountains and lassen national park area. Ek
.Extended discussion (Wednesday through Saturday)
stronger pacific storm begins to spread widespread rain and
mountain snow over the CWA Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

Front moves through Wednesday into Wednesday night with additional
vort maxes and cyclonic flow keeping showers in the forecast
Thursday. Post-frontal convection Wednesday looks promising with
stronger shear signaling potential for strong storms - we'll
monitor trends the next few days.

Precipitation totals Wednesday and Thursday look to be around
0.50 inches to 1 inch in the central valley with 1 to 2 inches for
the foothills and mountains. Mountain travel impacts due to
periods of heavy snow and strong wind are likely. Snow amounts of
1 to 3 feet above 5000 feet are possible with locally higher
amounts over higher terrain.

Diminishing precipitation chances heading into next weekend as
ridging over the eastern pacific extends into norcal.

Aviation
Widespread MVFR with local ifr across the central valley until
14z-16z as pacific frontal system moves through, then improving
conditions expected with isolated showers and thunderstorms
possible north of ksmf until 00z Sunday. Surface winds generally
below 10 kts.

Over the northern sierra nevada, widespread ifr lifr until about
04z Sunday obscuring terrain. Periods of snow continue through
about 18z with scattered snow showers lingering into this evening.

Local southwest surface wind gusts to 30 kts this morning.

Sto watches warnings advisories
Winter weather advisory until 5 pm pdt this afternoon for west
slope northern sierra nevada-western plumas county lassen park.

NOTE: East coast views moved to GEOS-16. They are experimental and not well supported by NOAA so they may not be correct so be warned. This change required redoing a large amount of the GOES code. If the image you are expecting is not showing, please let me know. You may need to use the EDIT function to update your location.

I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
