Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 211 PM PDT Sun May 19 2024

SYNOPSIS
Cooler temperatures expected through much of next week along with breezy afternoon winds. A trough of low pressure will bring scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms across the eastern half of NV Monday afternoon and evening.

SHORT TERM
Tonight through Monday night

An upper-level disturbance combined with weak instability will bring a 15-25% chance of light rain showers later this afternoon and evening across portions of eastern Nevada. Quiet and dry conditions for the rest of the CWA tonight with lows in the 30s and 40s and light winds.

A trough of low pressure is expected to move southward Monday and affect mainly the eastern half of the forecast area. Increased instability will lead to a 25-50% chance of light rain showers, and a 10-20% chance of isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon and early evening hours. Winds will be breezy out of the northwest in the afternoon with gusts to 20-30 mph possible.

High temperatures will be cooler than normal with readings in the upper 50s and lower 60s. Overnight lows will dip into the 30s with some of the colder locales in central NV in the mid 20s under mostly clear skies and light winds.

LONG TERM
Tuesday through next Saturday.

A departing upper level low pressure system will leave a northwest flow in its wake for Tuesday. Skies will be mainly sunny with breezy northwest winds to 20 mph. Highs will be below normal with readings in the 60s to near 70. Mostly clear and quiet conditions for the overnight with lows in the 30s and 40s.

Look for another low pressure system to move southward Wednesday and affect mainly the northern half of the forecast area through Friday. This will lead to light isolated to scattered rain showers and isolated thunderstorms possible mainly across northern Elko County. Highs will generally be in the 60s to 70s with lows in the 30s and 40s. Afternoon breezy conditions will develop with speeds of 10 to 20 mph and gusts to 30 mph. Dry conditions return next weekend under a westerly flow aloft.

AVIATION
Look for VFR conditions through the next 24 hours at all TAF sites. -SHRA is expected to develop mainly across the eastern terminals of KEKO and KELY. Winds W-NW10-20G30KT expected after 18Z Monday.

FIRE WEATHER
Quite and dry conditions overnight as isolated rain showers taper off over eastern Nevada. Increasing clouds Monday as a low pressure system approaches the region, bringing scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms across eastern NV in the afternoon and evening. Cooler temperatures expected along with increasing winds out of the northwest in the afternoon and evening.

HYDROLOGY
Runoff from snow melting from the remaining high mountain snowpack will continue through the week, which will result in elevated, and at times, increasing flows on streams and creeks coming off snow covered higher terrain.

The Owyhee River at Mountain City, Wildhorse Reservoir, Lamoille Creek, and the Jarbidge River near Jarbidge are all currently at or near action stage, and are expected to remain elevated over the coming days.
