area forecast discussion
national weather service seattle wa
830 pm pdt Sun aug 20 2017

Synopsis High pressure will build into the region tonight
giving dry conditions. Areas of low clouds and patchy fog will
develop over the coastal zones and near the water below about 500
feet in the interior Monday morning; the clouds and fog will
dissipate late in the morning leading to sunny skies and warm
conditions. Dry and warm conditions will continue on Tuesday. An
upper trough will bring clouds, a chance of showers, and cooler
temperatures later Wednesday through Thursday. Dry and warmer
weather will return to the area Friday and continue through next
weekend.

Short term The tricky part of the forecast is still the potential
for fog and low cloud development overnight. There are some areas of
low clouds along the coast and in the western part of the strait of
juan de fuca this evening, and it seems pretty reasonable that there
should be areas of low clouds and fog patches over mainly the marine
areas by daybreak--mostly on the coast and strait, but probably over
the inland waters as well. We might also have some cirrus over the
northwest part of the area--the GFS rh forecast around 300mb matched
up pretty well with the blob of cirrus that moved through this
afternoon, and the GFS shows some cirrus clipping the area Monday
morning. Otherwise, it will be a sunny day day--except of course for
that bit about the moon getting in the way for awhile.

The offshore upper upper ridge will move across the area Monday
afternoon and evening then move well east into western montana
Tuesday afternoon. Tuesday high temperatures in the interior from
about seattle southward will peak in the lower 80s.

After another dry and warm day on Tuesday, onshore pressure
gradients will increase by early Tuesday evening commencing a
marine push. Clouds will increase overnight and Wednesday may end
up being a rather cloudy day across the region.

An offshore frontal system, associated with an incoming trough
that will move across the area on Thursday will spread isolated
to scattered light showers across the area late Wednesday
afternoon or Wednesday night.

Long term An upper level trough will swing eastward across the
area Wednesday night through Thursday evening bringing clouds,
some shower activity, and cooler conditions. Thursday may be the
first day in several weeks where seattle fails to reach 70
degrees. As of today, seatac airport has reached 70 degrees or
higher for 53 consecutive days. The record is 62 days set in 2013.

While many locations will see some precipitation on Thursday,
amounts are going to be rather light with heavier amounts in the
northern cascades.

Extended model solutions show a ridge developing over the area
Friday through Sunday of next week for dry and warming conditions.

The models have backed off somewhat, however, in the strength of
the ridge and associated offshore flow. For now, we will continue
to indicate 80s across much of the area by next Sunday. Albrecht

Aviation Building upper level ridge just off the coast
will onshore Monday. NW flow aloft to back to westerly Monday. At
the surface, lower pressure east of the cascades with higher
pressure off the coast for low level onshore flow into western
washington. Air mass dry except for areas of a shallow surface-based
marine layer mainly along the coast.

Skies this evening have thin cirrus embedded in the NW flow with the
exception of areas of marine stratus along the coast. The marine
stratus is expected to spread inland by sunrise Monday morning but
primarily through the strait and into the south sound and sw
interior. The inland stratus to be quite thin and short-lived -
dissipated by 17z Monday.

Ksea... Northerly wind 5-10 kt easing to around 6 kt overnight.

Chance of low stratus Monday 13z-16z now lower - less than 30 pct.

Buehner

Marine Higher pressure off the coast with lower pressure east of
the cascades will maintain varying levels of low level onshore flow
into western washington through late this week.

Small craft advisory west winds are likely in the central and
eastern strait of juan de fuca each evening through early morning,
although gale westerlies are possible Tuesday night or Wednesday
night as a weak upper level trough approaches british columbia and
tracks inland Thursday. Buehner

Sew watches warnings advisories
Wa... None.

Pz... Small craft advisory through 5 am pdt Monday for central
u.S. Waters strait of juan de fuca-east entrance u.S. Waters
strait of juan de fuca.

Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
