southeast alaska forecast discussion
national weather service juneau ak
1107 pm akdt Tue mar 28 2017

Update Extend forecast periods were updated and published. The
longer range discussion was updated below.

Short term Issued at 411 pm Tue ... /tonight through Thursday/
upper level flow will remain swly and onshore through Wednesday
with weak impulses moving across the area. At the surface, a low
will approach the pws area from the south. A frontal trough assoc
with this low will increase the threat of showers through the
night, especially across the northern half of the panhandle. Some
breaks over the south could induce some patchy fog tomorrow
morning. More bands of showers continue through Wednesday. Some
snow will likely mix in during the overnight period into the early
mornings, but little to no accumulation is expected.

An upper level and surface ridge of high pressure will build over
the eastern gulf Wednesday night then shift east over the
panhandle through Thursday afternoon. Showers will diminish during
this time as a result.

On Thursday a stronger system looks to move across the gulf SW to
ne. Expect winds over the outside waters to increase to gale
force through the afternoon. As the front moves into the
panhandle in the evening expect areas along the outer coast to
have some gusty winds as well, likely up to 40mph. This looks to
be a warm system with a long fetch of moisture from the s-sw.

Expect most of the precip to fall as rain, likely heavy at times,
but again some snow could be mixed in at the start of the event
depending on when the precip moves in. This will be looked at with
greater detail over the next 2 days.

Used mainly the GFS and NAM for updates today. Overall, models
were in good agreement and forecast confidence is average to above
average.

Long term / Friday to Wednesday / the 500 mb level flow from
Friday onward with wpc and 00z GFS and 12 ec solution had moderate
to good agreement on the trough and short waves along with the
upper level ridges. A ridge from bc south to off the coast of the
pacific northwest is suppressed over the weekend but will rebuild
early next week.

Temperatures from Thursday into Friday were warmed slightly which
means less of chance of snow in the northern panhandle. For the weekend
southeast alaska is dealing with the remains of a stronger system
from Thursday, and a trailing trough that will move over the
panhandle. There may be small decrease in the rains or possibly
mixed showers on Monday. Better chances of rain later Monday to
the end of the with the next system.

It looks like their will be some minor cooling Saturday and
Sunday, though into the early part of next the longer range
solutions think that a large scale system will move in the gulf,
assisting the ridge to rebuild along the coast will likely help to
warm temperatures over southeast alaska the later half of next
week, as well as more rains across the region.

Confidence is average for the forecast into the later periods.

It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
