southeast alaska forecast discussion
national weather service juneau ak
425 am akdt Wed sep 19 2018

Short term Little change to synoptic pattern through the period
with dominant feature being ridge over the panhandle. This will
result in persistence forecast prevailing across SE ak. Some
patchy fog developed over paya again Tue evening is no longer over
the airfield. Expect any patchy fog to dissipate by mid morning
with mostly sunny skies across the region. Otherwise, below
normal to record low temps will continue to gradually moderate
over the inner channels through the period. However, anticipate
another round of frost advisories will be possible overnight into
thu under clear skies with light winds. Could also see some patchy
fog develop over the N gulf coast and S panhandle early thu.

Winds will remain under 20 kt for the marine areas with land winds
remaining light with seabreeze to 15 mph developing in the
afternoon. Inherited forecast represented this well and forecast
confidence remains above average.

Long term Friday through Tuesday ... Confidence is increasing
for a change in the weather pattern within the extended forecast
as rain is looking more likely to return to SE alaska later this
weekend. An upper level ridge will slowly shift eastward into the
gulf, pushing an upper trough into the western us canada by
Saturday. A strong jet over the top of the ridge will help drive a
weather front across the gulf Saturday bringing rain to the ne
gulf coast and at least into the n'rn panhandle Saturday night.

The general upper level pattern of a trough in the bering sea and
a ridge over the gulf is progged to persist into early next week,
but model details really begin diverging Sunday onward. Better
agreement among the models though has allowed thinking of a return
to a more seasonably wet pattern to be possible. Operational
models along with wpc guidance was consulted to nudge pop in an
upward trend starting Saturday evening through mid-week.

Friday may be the last full day of dry weather and above normal
temperatures across the panhandle. A shortwave feature may try to
sneak in ahead of the ridge Friday night over the panhandle, but
likely only to increase cloud cover. More zonal, onshore flow sets
up over the gulf Saturday likely to persist through the long term
period. Forecaster confidence is average through the weekend.

Ajk watches warnings advisories
Public... Frost advisory until 9 am akdt this morning for akz017-026.

Marine... None.

NOTE: East coast views moved to GEOS-16. They are experimental and not well supported by NOAA so they may not be correct so be warned. This change required redoing a large amount of the GOES code. If the image you are expecting is not showing, please let me know. You may need to use the EDIT function to update your location.

There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. If you have questions on these, please contact the author. 3) Articles that represent my personal opinions. These are intended to promote thought and for entertainment. These are not intended to be fact, they are my opinions. 4) Small programs that generate result presented on a web page. Like any computer program, these may and in some cases do have errors. Almost all of these also make simplifying assumptions so they are not totally accurate even if there are no errors. Please verify all results. 5) Weather information is from numerious of sources and is presented automatically. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
