southeast alaska forecast discussion
national weather service juneau ak
325 pm akdt Mon aug 20 2018

Short term Current water vapor satellite imagery depicts an
upper trough slowly lifting into the W gulf with the strong upper
ridge drifting from the E gulf into western bc. The trough will
continue to lift NE across the gulf through Tuesday. The
associated front draped across the central gulf will drift slowly
eastward impacting the E gulf by Tuesday morning. The front will
continue inland over the panhandle Tuesday afternoon spreading
rain from NW to SE before dissipating early Wednesday. An upper
short wave will continue to support showers across SE ak
Wednesday.

Wind forecast for the E gulf continues to be on track as models
suggest a gale force barrier jet setting up along the northern
gulf Monday night. Ahead of the front Tuesday, winds will likely
see a brief increase to 20-30 kt out of the se, especially over
the NE gulf and into lynn canal. MAX temperatures will cool
somewhat as moisture moves in and onshore flow returns. Expect
northern panhandle temps to drop to around 60, while the southern
area will cool more gradually into into the low-60s by Wednesday.

Model agreement is good in the short term and no substantial
changes were needed from the inherited forecast. Still expecting
some heavier rain along the NE gulf coast through Tuesday, while
some moderate rainfall may be quickly move over the northern areas
Tuesday afternoon. QPF values based on blend of models of choice
gfs and ec. Forecast confidence is average.

Long term Wednesday through Sunday ... Heavy rain over the
northeast gulf coast at the end of the short term forecast period
will diminish somewhat as the front progresses south and east
over the panhandle. Drier conditions are forecast for Thursday as
a ridge of high pressure shift east over the panhandle, but the
break will be short lived. What was being depicted as a short wave
riding over the top of a large surface high over the gulf is now
looking more like a fully developed front with a surface low
located south of prince william sound Thursday night. Model
agreement with regard to this feature is better tonight, and
confidence is higher, but differences are still evident in the
track of the low and the timing of the front as it crosses the
gulf and spreads rain across southeast alaska. Regardless of model
differences, it does look like the coming weekend will be rainy.

Revised pressure grids for Wednesday have less of a southerly
pressure gradient over the far northern inner channels. Diminished
winds down to less than small craft intensity as a result for
Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday with 10 to 15kts during the
overnight hours for all three days. Winds over the eastern gulf
also looking like they will remain in the 15 to 20 kt range.

No significant adjustments to temperatures with this long range
forecast. Daytime highs are expected to trend right around normal
for late august with overnight lows a degree or two above normal.

Blended GFS and the canadian nh model for updates to pressure with
gfs as the foundation for updates to wind. Blended GFS and sref
with some manual adjustments for pop and qpf. Overall forecast
confidence is average.

NOTE: East coast views moved to GEOS-16. They are experimental and not well supported by NOAA so they may not be correct so be warned. This change required redoing a large amount of the GOES code. There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. These are not intended to be fact, they are my opinions. 4) Small programs that generate result presented on a web page. Like any computer program, these may and in some cases do have errors. Almost all of these also make simplifying assumptions so they are not totally accurate even if there are no errors. Please verify all results. 5) Weather information is from numerious of sources and is presented automatically. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
