southeast alaska forecast discussion

Short term Monday through Tuesday a new cooler air mass is
spreading northward into seak today. Low clouds pushed into
ketchikan, craig, and klawock Sunday evening. As of 5 a.M. Mon the
low clouds have reached almost to cross sound on the outer coast
and through clarence strait to southern kupreanof island in the
inner channels based on surface observations and web cams. Surface
pressure rises just ahead of this denser air mass is causing
short periods of 20-30 kt winds. Had to issue a small craft
advisory for cross sound and yakutat bay for this morning due to
this surge of wind. Temperatures today over the southern two
thirds of the panhandle will be about 5-10 degres cooler than sun.

The northern inner channels from about wrangell to skagway will
also be a bit cooler today but may still reach around 60 or so
before the effects of the maritime air mass are felt.

Satellite imagery this morning also shows signatures of an upper
level low center over icy bay west of yakutat. Its associated
comma cloud curls back over the glacier bay and the central
panhandle. Latest models indicate weak dynamics but enough to
include mention of chance of rain today mainly west of lynn canal
and chatham strait. Amounts will be light and should only
temporarily dampen outdoor memorial day activities. Also mentioned
areas of fog and drizzle this morning mainly prince of wales
however no precipitation observed yet there. Expect clouds to
break enough for Sun breaks this afternoon over southern
panhandle.

Little change tues in the persistent and increasingly moist
southerly flow over SE ak. Expect lots of clouds but little
precipitation. Will have to watch out for possible rain moving
from bc across the coast range by later tues. The long term
discussion below addresses the increasing chance of rain during
the second half of the week.

Long term Wednesday through Monday as of 10 pm Sunday night
upper ridge will remain east of the area with upper low trof
sliding east into the northeast pacific through midweek, then will
likely be weakening and curving into the gulf. The later time
frame operational models of ECMWF gfs are showing differences
regarding trough low over the north pacific. The forecast
Wednesday to Thursday, the operational models have good agreement,
and are positioned just a little move east closer to the
southeast coast.

The surface low late Wednesday to Thursday will be lifting a band
of light rain into the southern panhandle with periods of rain
through the end of the week. General low pressure, will continue
to persist to the weekend over the gulf of alaska. So continued
chance to likely pops for the end of the week for the forecast.

With expected continued cloud cover over the panhandle, lowered a
few of the highs over the end of the week for southeast alaska.

Highs from the upper 50s to lower 60s.

Ajk watches warnings advisories
Public... None.

Marine... Small craft advisory for pkz022-053.

There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. These are not intended to be fact, they are my opinions. 4) Small programs that generate result presented on a web page. Like any computer program, these may and in some cases do have errors. Almost all of these also make simplifying assumptions so they are not totally accurate even if there are no errors. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
