southeast alaska forecast discussion
national weather service juneau ak
541 am akst Sat feb 23 2019

Short term through Sunday night upper ridge will continue
building over the gulf into eastern interior ak through the
period. Upper trof just S of the southern panhandle will move off
to the SE today. At the surface, high pressure will remain across
nw canada, while a smaller high develops over the gulf today.

Models were in good agreement on these features.

Most adjustments to the forecast were minimal, with local effect
details being the main change. Did raise some temps for Sun with
warming temps at 925 mb and plenty of sunshine expected. Did lower
winds some near skagway, and the strong wind headline was dropped.

Kept the high wind warning going for the juneau area through noon
today. Increased cloud cover over the gulf as stratus clouds will
develop under the building high through Sun night. Diminished some
of the cloud cover across the N tonight as most of the clouds
spilling in from the N will be high and thin. There is some
potential for stratus fog development over parts of the inner
channels Sun night as temps aloft warm, but it will take some time
to moisten up the lower levels as airmass is very dry right now.

Once winds decrease in lower levels though, moistening up should
commence. Later shifts will need to monitor this for possible
travel impacts. Otherwise, weather will be fairly quiet with the
strong ridge dominating things.

Long term Monday through Saturday as of 10 pm Friday
a blocking upper high center will be over prince william sound
early Monday morning. This pattern with some changes in the upper
offshore flow could last for ten days. This is a dry and cool
pattern, so the medium range forecasts were crafted with pops near
zero and mostly clear skies. There is a little bit of solar
heating these days, so the temperatures get cold at night, but
moderate in the afternoons. The more difficult aspect of these
forecasts will be the wind, but there are indications in the
models that there will be periods of light winds mixed in with
some of the usual outflow winds that we often get during high
pressure events. Vessel icing was added for northern lynn canal on
Monday. The models used were the 22 12z canadian for Monday into
Tuesday, then the wpc mean sea level pressure for Tuesday into
Saturday. Confidence is high with this set of forecasts due to the
stationary nature of blocking highs.

There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. If you have questions on these, please contact the author. 3) Articles that represent my personal opinions. These are intended to promote thought and for entertainment. These are not intended to be fact, they are my opinions. 4) Small programs that generate result presented on a web page. Like any computer program, these may and in some cases do have errors. Almost all of these also make simplifying assumptions so they are not totally accurate even if there are no errors. Please verify all results. 5) Weather information is from numerious of sources and is presented automatically. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
