Short term High pressure has built over the yukon today and has
tightened the gradient over the northern inner channels. As a
result, lynn canal is one of the few places with some wind today.

We have extended the small craft advisory and increased the speeds
to 25-30kt for that area through the late evening for southern
lynn and through early Friday morning for northern lynn. This flow
pattern has eliminated the precip potential through Friday
morning and has helped to create partly to mostly clear skies for
much of the region. With fewer clouds tonight, temperatures will
fall quickly. 850mb temps aloft are on the cold side compared to
what we've seen recently, so that will help with radiational
cooling as well. Windy places will be several decrees warmer, but
expect wind sheltered areas across the north to fall into the mid
20s. Parts of the southern panhandle might approach freezing, but
have kept most places slightly above.

A low pressure system will move into the western gulf on Friday
with a warm front extending into the eastern gulf. Have increased
wind speed slightly with this front over the outside waters Friday
and Friday night, then also over the inside waters as it moves
into the panhandle on Saturday. The inside winds may be adjusted
up a bit more as the timing of the front gets fine-tuned. Expect
rain with the front to reach the outer coast from yakutat to s.

Baranof Friday evening, then spread inland to juneau late in the
night. This is a very warm system, but will have to overcome the
cold air of Friday morning. Have haines and the klondike highway
starting off as snow late Friday night, but temperatures will be
warming overnight and when winds shift to the south Saturday
morning things will quickly change to all rain. As of right now we
have about an inch of snow for haines customs before it changes to
rain. White pass could get several inches out of this system, but
even there will likely mix with rain on Saturday.

Overall the biggest forecast challenge today was fog for tonight
through Friday morning. Locations with some wind will be less
likely to see fog. The northern panhandle will get cold tonight,
so most moisture will deposit in the form of frost instead of fog.

But when that starts to melt in the morning and the tide starts
going out after the 8am high tide, there is a good chance for fog
to re-form in the morning.

Long term Saturday through Tuesday as of 10 pm Wednesday the
weekend forecast remains wet and windy with a surface front
already ashore the northeast gulf coast Saturday morning. This
front will push eastward through the morning hours spreading
precipitation from northwest to southeast across the panhandle
through the day. Precipitation arrival to the far southern
panhandle remains likely Saturday, but there is a chance that it
might not arrive until early Sunday morning. The wet weather
continues through early next week as a surface low tracks east
across the gulf and numerous upper level short waves progress
eastward over the gulf.

The preciptiation forecast remains similar to the previous
forecasts with some periods of heavy rain expected this weekend
over the northern panhandle. However, with the strong southerly
transport associated with the system snowfall at low elevations is
unlikely. Haines and skagway could briefly see some snowfall early
Saturday depending upon precipitation onset time; however, these
locations will quickly change to rain if snow does occur. At
higher elevations along the klondike highway snow accumulation may
be a concern with an inch or two of snow accumulating every few
hours.

Forecast confidence remains slightly above average through the
weekend, but drops below average early next week as larger
ensemble spread develops and operational runs, especially those
of the ecmwf, sit largely out of phase with ensemble means.

Favored some detail from the 00z NAM to adjust precipitation
totals and wind speeds on Saturday bringing small crafts into the
eastern gulf. Snow ratios were kept below climatological averages
due to the warm air advection occurring.

There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. These are not intended to be fact, they are my opinions. 4) Small programs that generate result presented on a web page. Like any computer program, these may and in some cases do have errors. Almost all of these also make simplifying assumptions so they are not totally accurate even if there are no errors. Please verify all results. 5) Weather information is from numerious of sources and is presented automatically. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
