southeast alaska forecast discussion
national weather service juneau ak
249 pm akdt Thu may 23 2019

Short term A quick glace at current satellite imagery shows
cloudy conditions associated with a weak weather front over
southeast alaska. This will keep conditions damp overnight as
showers persist through the morning hours of Friday. As this
system shifts off to the south and high pressure builds over the
gulf, skies will clear and temperatures will warm. This trend will
continue through the weekend under the influence of strong warm
air advection, ultimately allowing temperatures to push into the
upper 60s and low to mid 70s on Saturday with cooler temperatures
along the coastline north of CAPE decision. The main limiting
factor could be sea breeze development near the water; however,
more interior locations should have little issue benefiting from
the pattern.

Not much change was needed in the short term. Temperatures were
warmed slightly on Saturday, specifically, over the northern
panhandle. This has introduced a few additional 70 degree highs.

Winds were also decreased over most land areas to account for the
weak gradients that will be in play tomorrow and Saturday. Overall
forecast confidence is above average.

Long term Saturday through Thursday as of 10 pm Wednesday
models have trended slower with the eastward movement of an
occluded front into the eastern gulf for the weekend into early
next week. Models are showing the upper ridge over the area
holding more strongly into early next week. They diverge beginning
around Mon with where the ridge GOES and whether any shortwaves
get into the area. Given the trend, have slowed the eastward
progression of pops for the weekend and mon. It is possible that
the front will not make it onshore before it dissipates, which
would likely keep much of the main part of the panhandle dry into
mon. Ended up blending in latest wpc to handle pops, with even
more manual cutting back along eastern side of the pop field.

Otherwise, looks like a warmer weekend with more sunshine
expected. This may last into memorial day as well. Temps were not
changed much over the area, except for some minor adjustments due
to local effects. Think inner channels will get well into the 60s
at least, with some 70s possible over the more eastern areas.

Beyond mon, with so much difference between the models, ended up
limiting pops to chance at most. Have noticed a trend toward
maintaining more robust ridging over and just E of the area
though into midweek, which could keep things on the warmer and
drier side if it happens.

Marine Main concern over the next few days are small craft
winds and higher seas over the eastern gulf waters, which will
persist through most of Friday and subside significantly between
Friday and Saturday as the high intensifies. The strongest winds
for the next few days over the inner channels should occur between
tonight and tomorrow morning. A strong thermal drive has the
potential to channel small craft winds through cross sound and icy
strait between Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening.

Ajk watches warnings advisories
Public... None.

Marine... Small craft advisory for pkz041-042.

I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
