Short term Amplified upper trough continues over the eastern
gulf this morning with strong and warm upper ridging in place over
the panhandle. This has lead to record highs being set in a few
locations overnight. Low level frontal zone continues to lie
draped roughly parallel to and just west of the panhandle. Upper
jet aligned parallel to the front and is helping to direct strong,
deep moisture transport into the NE gulf coast early this
morning.

Trough will narrow and begin to shift eastward through tonight.

Tightening low level thermal gradient and jet MAX ejecting out of
the base of the trough this evening will spawn surface wave
development in the SE gulf. At this time, it appears the wave will
be elongated and the jet structure (not progressive or super
diffluent) doesn't support a strong, compact low at this time.

That being said, still expect an increase in southerly winds
through the inside waters this evening spreading northward through
the morning hours on Tuesday. Low level flow near 50kt and an
increasingly favorable surface gradient orientation will likely
lead to a period of strong SCA or low end gales for north south
oriented channels as the wave passes tonight and early Tuesday.

Rainfall will also increase markedly first over the southern
panhandle this evening and over the north by early Tuesday.

Once the front passes by Tuesday afternoon, vertically stacked low
will continue to spin over the northern gulf. Thus expect
continued shower activity over the north with more scattered
showers central and south through Tuesday night. Snow levels will
gradually lower from over 4000 ft this morning to around 1500ft by
Tuesday night as cooler air aloft moves in with the upper trough.

Light accumulations of snow are possible near white pass by
morning Tuesday but should remain below advisory levels. With 500
mb temps near -30c under the vertically stacked low, it is not out
of the question that some thunder may occur along the NE gulf
coast but with the overall energetics of the system winding down,
think any thunderstorm activity would be isolated at best.

Long term Wednesday through Monday as of 10 pm Sunday
still a lot of issues with model consistency today. The late week
time frame has been back and forth on how far S upper energy goes,
with some models suggesting some of the upper vort features may
get far enough N to bring in a higher precip threat than current
forecast has for thu-fri. Based on pattern aloft, still think it
is more likely most of the vort features will stay further s, but
confidence is wavering on a drier late week period. Wetter
conditions should return over the weekend as a deepening upper
trof moves into the e-central gulf. Still have some model timing
differences and strength of any frontal waves to work out. Given
all of the above, decided against making any significant changes
to the long range period.

NOTE: East coast views moved to GEOS-16. They are experimental and not well supported by NOAA so they may not be correct so be warned. This change required redoing a large amount of the GOES code. If the image you are expecting is not showing, please let me know. You may need to use the EDIT function to update your location.

There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. If you have questions on these, please contact the author. 3) Articles that represent my personal opinions. These are intended to promote thought and for entertainment. These are not intended to be fact, they are my opinions. 4) Small programs that generate result presented on a web page. Like any computer program, these may and in some cases do have errors. Almost all of these also make simplifying assumptions so they are not totally accurate even if there are no errors. Please verify all results. 5) Weather information is from numerious of sources and is presented automatically. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
