national weather service juneau ak

Synopsis A low offshore of CAPE spencer tracks SE along the bc
coast tonight. A ridge builds over the SE gulf Wednesday as a
weather front approaches the central gulf. The weather front moves
into the panhandle Thursday.

Short term As one system leaves, we prepare for another on
Thursday. This turned to rain a little earlier than expected, but
this changeover and the inherent uncertainties with a couple of
degrees in temperature gave us concern. Therefore, while there
were some spotty snow verifications including the back of the
mendenhall valley in juneau, many areas near the windy gastineau
channel turned to rain overnight, thus limiting overall
accumulations. Likewise, rain incursions helped limit overall
values in pelican as well. However, petersburg did verify their
advisory well.

A weak period of outflow will briefly allow a period small craft
to northerly gales in many of the inner channels as well as
both radiational and advectional cooling. This will help set us up
for the next storm that marches across the gulf Wednesday night
and Thursday. We were not impressed with the outflow coming into
downtown juneau, so we lowered wind speeds there.

The fundamentals of the forecast have not really changed. Late
model guidance appears to have shifted the low center slightly
southward, as well as the warm tongue of air ahead of it. This in
theory should help snow overrunning in much of the central
panhandle. Worrisome still is MOS and its bullishness on southerly
winds throughout the panhandle. Many a snow forecast have melted
away with a lukewarm mixed atmosphere. We decided to issue a
winter weather advisory early for yakutat Wednesday night and
Thursday morning, while gustavus and juneau were given watches
for Thursday. What appears to be more certain is that the highest
rates will likely occur midday Thursday, and at this point, we
foresee the best warming later in the day or early in the evening.

In fact, we purposely raise temperatures from midnight Thursday
morning into Thursday evening the entire time. How quickly they
rise will hold the keys to snow verification. Finally, there is
the chance of a significant snow event for haines and skagway. But
signals here are also mixed. East winds in haines would not bode
well for keeping heavy accumulating snow in the area. But
soundings do want to sent southerly flow through lynn canal mid-
day Thursday for its best chance of accumulation. We currently are
carrying 4 to 6 inches for both haines and skagway.

Long term Thursday through Tuesday ... Colder air will likely
be pulled in behind the low into the northern panhandle. This
could also help drive brief northerly outflow winds Friday.

After the system moves out we still are anticipating a period of
dry weather through the weekend and into early next week. Model
guidance all share a similar idea of a very amplified pattern with
a strong ridge extending over the gulf and the alaskan interior.

High pressure center may persist over the area through mid-week,
or longer. Northerly flow will bring some cooling early into the
weekend but as the flow switches to more offshore could see some
slightly warming temperatures into early next week. Forecast
confidence is average through the period.

Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases.
