Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Reno NV 234 PM PDT Sun Jun 2 2024

SYNOPSIS

After a brief cooling on Monday with increased breezes, plenty of clouds and possible morning rain showers, confidence remains high for a significant warmup later this week as highs approach 100 degrees in the hottest western NV valleys. Afternoon thunderstorms are also possible each day from Wednesday through next weekend.

DISCUSSION

Key Points:

* For Monday, a brief cooling to near average in most areas with increased breezes, widespread cloud cover, and light rain showers mainly in the morning for northeast CA/northwest NV.

* Still heating up this week, peaking Wed-Fri with highs mid- upper 90s and possibly 100 degrees for lower elevations, and 80s for Sierra, along with a chance for PM t-storms.

* Next weekend the heat starts to ease up but still warmer than average, with continued chances for PM t-storms.

Zonal flow aloft with a push of Pacific moisture, and low pressure moving into the far northwest US will bring increased cloud cover across CA-NV for the remainder of today through Monday. While the best rain chances remain over the Pacific Northwest, light rain showers could extend to areas north of Susanville-Lovelock late tonight-Monday morning, with a few leftovers near the Sierra crest into early afternoon. The fast movement of these showers along with limited instability will keep rain amounts light, generally 0.10" or less.

The effects of the widespread cloud cover will make tonight rather warm for early June, with much of western NV remaining above 60 degrees. On the flip side for Monday, these same clouds will bring temperatures down 5-10 degrees from today in most areas--closer to average in the 70s-lower 80s for lower elevations and mid-upper 60s near the Sierra. Breezy west winds prevail with sustained gradient-driven speeds of 15-25 mph and gusts up to 35 mph through Monday afternoon, producing choppy lake conditions from Tahoe to west central NV. Sierra ridge gusts are likely to peak in the 55-65 mph range late tonight-Monday AM.

The remainder of the week continues to favor a sharp warming trend with the peak daytime highs likely Wednesday-Friday. While the main western NV communities have only a small 10-30% chance for triple digit heat, the probability is quite high (70-90% chance)
for at least 95 degrees. Remain hydrated and limit strenuous afternoon activities especially if sensitive to heat, but also exercise caution if cooling off in area lakes/rivers/streams, as the water is still cold with swift flows in some areas.

The risk of afternoon-evening thunderstorms will also return on these hottest days, starting Wednesday but increasing Thursday- Friday, with strong storms possible. The most favored areas for storms is still dependent on the eventual location of the ridge center and the track of upper level disturbances along the western periphery of this ridge.

For next weekend, the upper level ridge is projected to become weaker or displaced farther from western NV. The majority of the ensemble guidance favors a gradual cooling trend but still keeps highs about 10 degrees above average (around 90 for lower elevations) by next Sunday. We'll retain the potential for mainly PM thunderstorms going through next weekend, although confidence in coverage and location is lower due to increased variance in the smaller scale weather features. MJD

AVIATION

VFR conditions will prevail through Monday with an expanding and thickening mid-high level cloud deck at the main terminals. Areas north of I-80 could see clouds with CIGS low enough to obscure higher peaks, with brief -SHRA between 14-20Z Monday.

Typical SW-W breezes with gusts 20-25 kt today will increase to 25-30 kt Monday between 20-03Z. Ridge level/FL100 wind gusts around 50 kt will produce increased turbulence with periods of LLWS possible overnight thru early Monday afternoon. MJD
