Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Juan PR 418 PM AST Thu Oct 21 2021

SYNOPSIS. A tropical wave moving across the area will continue to result in scattered shower and thunderstorm activity through this evening. A drier and more stable weather pattern is expected to prevail from Friday through early next week. The combination of moderate to fresh easterly winds and a northerly swell will result in choppy seas Friday through the upcoming weekend.

SHORT TERM. Tonight through Saturday .

A surge in moisture from a tropical wave has been producing scattered shower and isolated thunderstorm activity across mainland Puerto Rico as well as portions of the U.S. Virgin Islands and the surrounding waters through the afternoon. However, the activity has been fast-moving and as a result the flood threat has been limited compared to previous days. The activity, especially over mainland PR, will persist into the evening hours.

As the tropical wave and the associated moisture field moves westward later tonight, a much drier air mass will be moving in and will persist through the rest of the short term period. This drier air mass is due to the combination of a building mid-level ridge and and a Saharan Air Layer. As a result, expect hazy skies as well as limited shower activity across the area for Friday and Saturday. Nevertheless, some brief patches of higher low-level moisture embedded within the large envelope of dry air may spark some late night and early morning passing shower activity across the regional waters, with some of the activity briefly affecting the USVI and eastern Puerto Rico followed by the development of limited afternoon convection across western Puerto Rico. Given the overall unfavorable conditions, the afternoon convection is not expected to result in significant rainfall activity, therefore, the flood threat is expected to remain low.

LONG TERM. Sunday through Thursday .

PREV DISCUSSION. /issued 441 AM AST Thu Oct 21 2021/

At the start of next week, patchy moisture is expected to make its way through the region. The moisture will generally be sequestered to the lower levels, with dry air aloft, associated with a Saharan Air Layer. Additionally, ridging in the mid- to upper-levels will result in conditions that are less favorable for convective development. A typical pattern of showers is expected over the region, though development is likely to be somewhat inhibited. There may be a small increase in showers on Monday, with a somewhat more substantial patch of moisture makes its way into the region. This relatively dry pattern will continue through the early part of the week.

Around midweek, the ridging aloft will begin to erode, as a deep- layer trough associated with a low over the US Northeast and Canadian Maritimes intensifies and digs southward. Conditions aloft will become more favorable for convective development because of the influence of this trough as it approaches from the west/northwest. Additionally, a secondary low may form in the tail of this trough and linger near the region, promoting additional and prolonged instability. Meanwhile, moisture is expected to be pulled up over the region from off of the ITCZ. Though it is likely that model guidance is being a little overly zealous with these features, it is likely that there will be another stretch late next week with a prolonged active, wet pattern over the region.

AVIATION. Sct SHRA arnd the USVI with VCSH. Sct SHRA/TSRA ovr ern PR to sprd across the island til 21/21Z with lcl MVFR and mtn obscurations wrn and interior PR and downstream from El Yunque. Flow is ESE 8-12 knots with higher gusts near TSRA and along the coasts, diminishing aft 21/22Z to bcm ESE 5-10 kt. Stronger winds indicated aft 22/14Z. Max winds NNW 20-30 kts btwn FL380-480.

MARINE. Moderate to fresh easterly winds between 15 and 20 knots will prevail through the upcoming weekend. In addition, a long dominant period northerly swell will affect the local waters by late Friday and continue through the upcoming weekend. The combination of the winds and swell will result in choppy seas across the regional waters. Therefore, small craft operators will need to exercise caution during the upcoming days.

For beachgoers, a moderate risk of rip currents is expected across most of the local beaches on Friday. However, by Friday night and continuing into the upcoming weekend, the rip current risk, due mostly to the northerly swell, will increase to high across the north-facing beaches of Puerto Rico and Culebra as well as the eastern tip of Saint Croix.
