Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Honolulu HI 949 AM HST Mon Oct 18 2021

SYNOPSIS. Moderate trade winds will continue to focus clouds and showers over the windward and mauka areas today, but a drying trend is expected over the next couple of days as trade winds weaken. Trades are expected to strengthen again late in the week, along with an uptick in shower activity.

DISCUSSION. No changes are expected to the forecast this morning.

A ridge to the north of the island, and an upper level low to the northwest are the main synoptic features near the islands impacting our weather. The ridge is helping to maintain a trade wind flow, and the upper level low continues to stream high clouds over the islands.

A front north of the ridge will push the ridge closer to the islands over the next day or two, resulting in a weakening trend in our winds. The front is not expected to reach the islands, however moisture from the front will likely get caught up in the trade winds flow later in the week.

The upper level low is bringing high clouds to the region, which are expected to clear the islands later today as the low moves to the west. The GFS and ECMWF are in good agreement with the upper low moving to the west through the end of the week. They are also in decent agreement with another upper level low and trough moving over the islands from the north during the second half of the week. The GFS has this next upper low stronger than the ECMWF, so will be keeping the forecast unchanged at this time, but will be monitoring future runs of both models to see the trend.

A drier and more stable air mass is expected to spread over the islands through mid week. The background trade wind flow will focus whatever showers we do have to the windward and mauka areas through Wednesday. As additional moisture, and the upper level trough mentioned above, move over the islands during the second half of the week, look for shower activity to pick up. A new high building north of the island behind the above mentioned cold front will help to increase our trades back to moderate levels for the upcoming weekend.

AVIATION. Latest satellite and radar imagery this morning shows relatively few areas of low clouds and showers across the state. Although isolated MVFR conditions are possible today within any heavier showers that do develop along windward areas and their adjacent waters, VFR conditions are expected to prevail.

High pressure north of the islands will keep moderate to locally breezy trade winds in place today, though speeds should trend lower by tonight. For now, AIRMET Tango remains in effect for moderate low-level turbulence over and immediately south through west of the mountains of all islands. However, as surface wind speeds trend down, this AIRMET may be cancelled later today or tonight as the ridge north of the state weakens. By tomorrow through mid-week, local land/sea breezes are expected to take over as background flow becomes rather weak.

MARINE. Small Craft Advisory (SCA) winds will continue into this evening over the waters around Maui County and the Big Island. The moderate to locally strong trades will gradually trend down over the next few days, due to a series of fronts from the far northeast Pacific weakening the ridge north of the islands. These fronts will make their way into the northern offshore waters this Wednesday and Thursday, though both are expected to fall apart before reaching the Hawaiian Islands. High pressure reestablishes north of the islands Thursday through Friday, bringing a return of locally strong trades, favoring the typically windy waters around Maui County and waters south of the Big Island, where SCA winds are likely.

As the trades ease, the surf along the east facing shores will lower a little each day as well. The boost in the trades on Friday will lead to increasing surf along the east facing shores over the upcoming weekend.

A series of north-northwest to north swells are expected to move through the coastal waters this week, with the first of three due in today. This small pulse will be reinforced by a slightly larger north-northwest swell Tuesday night through Wednesday. An even larger north swell follows Thursday night and Friday, with surf likely to reach advisory level for the north facing shores. In addition, Kahului Harbor and other north facing harbors will be susceptible to harbor surges from this north swell. This swell will slowly lower over the weekend.

Small surf along the south facing shores will get a bit of a boost beginning early Tuesday as a small, but long (14 to 16 second period) south swell due in tonight. This swell will linger through Wednesday before tapering off through the end of the week. A similar swell could arrive over the upcoming weekend.

HFO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. Small Craft Advisory until 6 PM HST this evening for Alenuihaha Channel-Big Island Leeward Waters-Big Island Southeast Waters.
