Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Honolulu HI 400 PM HST Tue Sep 28 2021

SYNOPSIS. Moderate to locally breezy trade winds are expected through the weekend. Several weak upper level disturbances could bring some periods of showery trade wind weather starting late Thursday for the Big Island and over the weekend for the smaller islands.

DISCUSSION. High pressure far north of the state will gradually weaken and shift southeast in response to a front passing far north of the state. This will cause the breezy trade winds to decrease to moderate speeds tonight through Wednesday. As for weather, we should see our typical trade wind showers over windward and mauka areas through Wednesday.

For Thursday through the weekend, models are showing several weak upper level disturbances moving near the state which should bring an increase of clouds and shower coverage. At the surface, we have a weak trough passing far south of the state which should result in the pressure gradient tightening over the state, causing the trade winds to pick back up to breezy speeds by Thursday afternoon.

The first weak upper level disturbance is expected to approach the Big Island on Thursday and could bring increasing showers over windward Big Island and east Maui Thursday afternoon into the evening hours. Over the weekend, global models are now showing the trade winds remaining in place and an upper level low near the state. This is a quite a bit of difference compared to yesterday's model runs. The upper level low will likely bring an increase of showers, but the intensity of these showers will be dependent on the position of the upper level low. The latest GFS model has the upper level low just north of Oahu and the ECMWF has the low position slightly further away and northeast of Oahu. If this low ends up trending more south and west, we could end up seeing some heavy showers. But at this point, it looks like we will likely see showery trade wind showers with some moderate rainfall accumulations over windward and mauka areas. Stay tuned for more details as the forecast evolves.

AVIATION. Although trade winds have remained breezy across the state today, as surface high pressure north of the islands gradually weakens, wind speeds will diminish this evening. For now, AIRMET Tango remains in effect for low-level mechanical turbulence over and immediately south through west of the mountains of all islands. However, this AIRMET will likely be cancelled later this afternoon as surface wind speeds decrease and the threat for low-level turbulence diminishes.

VFR flight conditions will generally prevail across the state tonight and tomorrow with only isolated MVFR ceilings and visibilities in heavier showers. Showers will favor north through east facing sections of the islands throughout the forecast period, especially in the overnight and early morning hours.


MARINE. Surface high pressure centered approximately 1,100 miles north northeast of the state will gradually weaken and shift eastward through Wednesday. This will relax the pressure gradient over the state and result in slightly weaker mid week trade winds. A new high from the Northwest Pacific will build in north of the state Thursday. This will re-tighten the pressure gradient over the islands and allow for the return of late week moderate to locally fresh trades. High pressure will establish itself north of the region this weekend in support of continued moderate trade flow.

The small reinforcing north northwest bump in swell that filled in earlier today will fall through tonight. A couple of mid to late week very small, short period north swells will come through that will keep weekday north and west facing surf from going completely flat but will lift weekend surf by a couple of feet. A few very small, long period background Southern Hemisphere swells will arrive through the remainder of the week. These will also keep south surf from going completely flat through the work week. Choppy wind wave surf along many east facing shores should vary little with a subtle mid week drop in response to slightly weaker trades.
