Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Honolulu HI 936 AM HST Thu Oct 28 2021

SYNOPSIS. Light trade winds will be weakening further as we head into the weekend. Showers are more likely over Kauai and Oahu today, otherwise expect afternoon sea breezes and nighttime land breezes to develop. This will lead to clouds and a chance of showers over leeward and interior sections of the islands each afternoon, followed by clearing skies at night.

DISCUSSION. A dying stationary front northwest of the islands has weakened the winds over the islands, with the weakest winds expected over the western islands. Some local afternoon sea breezes are expected today, with some nighttime land breezes. Moisture associated with the front has spread over Kauai and Oahu, so we are seeing more shower activity over those islands compared to the remaining islands.

That stationary front is expected to continue to dissipate over the couple of days, with little change in our local weather. High pressure behind the front will edge over the islands maintaining the light trade wind flow over the region. A new front approaching from the northwest at this time is expected to be a similar outcome on our local weather. The front is expected to peter out northwest of the islands, with some moisture once again reaching the islands.

All of this to say that winds will continue to weaken this weekend, and remain on the light side into next week. Expect a slight drying trend as we head into the weekend, so shower activity will be limited. With the light winds, clouds and showers will be more likely during the afternoon and evening hours, with clearing overnight. The moisture mentioned above with the next front will likely edge over the western islands early next week.

AVIATION. Light to moderate trade winds will prevail during the next 24 hours, with some localized afternoon sea breezes and overnight land breezes likely in the more sheltered areas. Relatively dry conditions will prevail over the eastern end of the state, while a band of low clouds and showers brings some MVFR cigs and vsbys to Kauai and Oahu at times.

AIRMET Sierra remains in effect for windward sections of Kauai and Oahu through 2200z. Conditions will likely improve by that time for windward Oahu, but may continue beyond 2200z for windward Kauai.

MARINE. Gentle to moderate trade winds will hold through today as a stationary front diminishes over the far north offshore waters and a weak ridge builds between the front and the state. The ridge will gradually extend over the state and move south, reining the trade wind speeds to light and variable tomorrow into early next week.

Surf along north facing shores is on the rise today as a moderate, short period north-northwest swell fills in. This swell will peak tonight and then slowly subside tomorrow into the weekend. A larger, longer period north-northwest swell is timed to reach the island chain Saturday night, peak Sunday and slowly fade Monday. Surf along north and west facing shores will reach High Surf Advisory (HSA) thresholds, or possibly low- end High Surf Warning (HSW) thresholds. Yet another, larger, longer period northwest swell is slated to fill in as early as Monday night, jacking surf heights to HSW criteria along north and west facing shores. This swell will slowly subside Tuesday night through mid week.

Summer average surf along south facing shores will slowly fade through the weekend. Small, trade wind choppy surf along east facing shores will become nearly flat tomorrow through early next week as trade winds transition from fresh to light and variable.

HFO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. None.
