Synopsis for hawaiian coastal waters.. Weak surface high pressure over the hawaiian islands will maintain light to gentle variable breezes the next several days. An ongoing moderate size northwest swell passage will produce elevated seas over more exposed coastal waters and channels throughout the day.

SYNOPSIS. Light and variable winds will continue through the week as a surface ridge remains over or just north of the islands. A land and sea breeze regime will dominate, leading to afternoon and evening clouds with spotty showers and clearing at night. Moisture associated with dissipated fronts may support better shower chances near Kauai.

DISCUSSION. A weak surface ridge is siting just north of Kauai this morning, while a flat ridge aloft is producing somewhat stable conditions with a weak inversion based around 7,000 to 8,000 feet. A dissipated front has left slightly higher low level moisture lingering around Kauai, but land breezes have cleared out skies over all islands this morning. Sea breezes will produce interior and mauka clouds this afternoon along with spotty showers, and due to the moisture pooled around Kauai, that island could see more shower activity. Showers will diminish early evening, and land breezes will leading to mostly clear conditions overnight.

The dominant land and sea breeze regime will continue through Friday, as the surface ridge stretches across or just north of the state. The Big Island will experience brief periods of east to southeast winds, but gentle and variable conditions will prevail on most islands. Showers may be slightly active on Tuesday as a front stalls and dissipates just north of Kauai and the ridge aloft temporarily erodes. Otherwise, expect showers to be spotty and favor interior areas each afternoon.

In the extended, the GFS has been showing a weakening front stalling over Kauai early Saturday, but the ECMWF depicts this feature dissipating farther north. Both models hint at a return of trade winds next weekend.

AVIATION. The latest radar and satellite trends continue to show limited shower activity across the state. Only isolated showers are expected in the vicinity of TAF sites through the remainder of the morning, as weak high pressure and land breezes dominate the region. The weak wind pattern will continue for the next couple of days, allowing for afternoon sea breeze clouds and showers for interior sections and along slopes. Land breeze development during the evenings will help diminish showers and clouds overnight. Mainly VFR conditions are expected again today with only isolated MVFR cigs possible in any heavier showers.

Currently no AIRMETs are in effect. Earlier concerns of a potential need for tempo mod upper level turbulence, have lessened as guidance continues to show the area of greatest concern shifting east of the region. However, some light upper level turb can still be expected for parts of the local area today.

MARINE. Weak surface high pressure over the Hawaiian Islands will maintain light to gentle variable breezes the next several days. This weak wind regime will allow smaller scale land and sea breezes to be the dominant flow within the island's nearshore waters through mid week. A cold front will approach the region from the northwest Tuesday and clip the far northern offshore waters later in the day. The next cold front will be stronger and arrive next weekend. This front will veer late week light to moderate east southeast winds around to the northeast by next weekend. An ongoing moderate size northwest swell passage will produce elevated seas over the more exposed coastal waters and channels throughout the day. A Small Craft Advisory for these elevated seas remains in effect for the waters surrounding Niihau and Kauai, including the windward waters and channels surrounding Oahu, Maui County and Big Island through this afternoon.

The delayed arrival of this latest northwest swell will keep high surf in place through the day. Therefore, the High Surf Advisory (HSA) for exposed north and west facing shorelines is in effect through this afternoon. This swell energy will slowly dissipate through Monday and surf will likely fall below advisory thresholds by early Monday morning. The next west northwest swell will move into the region early Tuesday and pick surf back up to HSA levels along north and west facing shores by Tuesday night. This swell energy will peak Wednesday night and then fall into Thursday. A much larger west northwest swell will be arriving on its heels Friday. This swell will easily generate HSA level surf that may potentially exceed High Surf Warning thresholds next weekend.

HFO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. High Surf Advisory until 6 PM HST this evening for north and west facing shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, and Molokai, and for north facing shores of Maui.

Small Craft Advisory until 6 PM HST this evening for Kauai Northwest Waters-Kauai Windward Waters-Kauai Leeward Waters- Kauai Channel-Oahu Windward Waters-Kaiwi Channel-Maui County Windward Waters-Alenuihaha Channel-Big Island Windward Waters.
