Synopsis for hawaiian coastal waters.. Trade winds will weaken the next couple of days as a ridge of high pressure stalls just north of the state. A weak frontal boundary with move over the area Wednesday night through Friday that may increase shower coverage. High pressure will rebuild north of the state Thursday and this will initiate the return of fresh to locally strong trades this weekend.

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Honolulu HI 929 PM HST Tue Oct 19 2021

SYNOPSIS. A ridge of high pressure approaching the islands will make for gentle trades for one more day. A dry and stable airmass overhead will produce lots of sunshine on Wednesday, only a few light showers. The remnants of an old front will reach Kauai Wednesday night, and might also spread to Oahu Thursday or Friday, bringing an increase in clouds and some showers. Trades will start to increase Thursday and become breezy by the weekend. Drier and more stable air will also return this weekend.

DISCUSSION. Radar and satellite this evening showing a nice quiet night in progress. Both 00z soundings show the inversion near 5500 feet, with 700 mb temperatures and the Hilo sounding has below normal PW of 1.28 inches. CIMSS MIMIC TPW and GOES-W derived PW is even lower near Kauai, about 1.1 inches. Water vapor imagery shows a small anticyclone aloft which has been moving E to W just S of the islands, also helping to keep things quiet. Have lowered PoPs a bit for the night and changed precip intensity to light in the Wx grids.

A surface ridge about 150 mi to the NE of Kauai and Oahu is sinking slowly S toward the islands. The models maintain gentle trades for the afternoon . but just barely, and the usual areas protected by the trades will have daytime sea breezes today. Should be a nice day with low humidity, lots of sunshine with limited cloudiness, and only a few light showers.

A dissipating front is roughly 300 miles N of Kauai and also pushing S. The cloud and shower band associated with this front looks like it's already starting to break up a bit. The guidance has been trending slightly faster with this weakening boundary as it approaches, and thus have adjusted the forecast to increase PoPs some for the Garden Isle after midnight Wed night. Remnants of this shallow boundary will continue to bring added clouds and showers to Kauai, and probably Oahu as well (although there is some uncertainty about that). The middle and southern main islands don't look to see much from this boundary and may remain pretty quiet through the period.

High pressure following the dissipating boundary will return trades back to breezy levels for the end of the work week. The returning breezy trades alone will increase showers some for windward Maui and the Big Island. A gradual decrease in low level moisture and an increase in stability should yield another relatively quiet period into the weekend and early next week, with overall rather limited mainly windward and mauka trade wind showers.

AVIATION. Expect a VFR night tonight as a weak surface ridge lies just to the north of the islands. This ridge will gradually dissipate through Wednesday, while a weak front dissipate as it approaches the islands from the north. For tonight, a light to locally moderate north to northeast wind flow will bring ashore an isolated light shower or two into the windward sections of all islands exposed to this flow. On the lee side, a light offshore flow will develop, therefore maintaining fair skies and keeping any showers over the adjacent waters, including the Kona coast.

Remnants of this front may reach Kauai after 210400z. Trade winds will be picking up speed as well, areawide.

MARINE. The tail end of a weak cold front moving closer to the state will push a ridge of high pressure over the north offshore waters closer to the state. This will cause Wednesday morning trade winds to drop off . especially over the windward waters as the ridge axis of this high stalls in the vicinity of these waters. There may be an areal increase of near coastal, western island showers Thursday and Friday as moisture pools near this weakened, diffuse front. Starting Thursday, high pressure will re-establish itself north of the state. This will restrengthen local trades into the fresh to locally strong range by Saturday. A moderate north northwest swell (340 degrees) will slowly fill in tonight and steadily build throughout Wednesday. The forerunners of this new swell should begin arriving at the northwest buoys late tonight into early Wednesday morning. This swell will likely peak Wednesday night and gradually decline Thursday. A reinforcing north swell (010 degrees) is expected to fill in Thursday night and peak on Friday. The later of these two swells could lift surf to near High Surf Advisory thresholds during its Friday peak. With Friday's swell being more northerly in direction, there will be a harbor surge threat within Kahului and Hilo's harbors as surge increases to above 6 feet.

South facing shore surf should see a small bump as new medium and long period low southwest to southeast swells fill in through Thursday. Otherwise, only background energy is expected from the South Pacific. Surf along east facing shores should see some wrap from the pair of north swells the next several days. Trade wind wave swell will be on the rise through the weekend in response to strengthened trades.

HFO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. None.
