Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Honolulu HI 959 AM HST Sat Oct 23 2021

SYNOPSIS. Mostly sunny conditions will prevail over most of the area this afternoon followed by increasing showers late tonight into Sunday morning, especially over windward and mauka areas. Locally breezy trades will weaken to moderate by Tuesday and will remain on the drier side of normal well into next week.

DISCUSSION. This mornings satellite imagery shows mostly clear conditions across the smaller islands and showery conditions over windward Big Island. Rainfall totals show many areas with over an inch of rain during the past 12 hours. Kawainui stream near Waipio valley tops the list with 1.48 inches of rain. For rest of the day today, conditions are expected to improve over windward Big Island with some scattered showers from time to time. For rest of the state, we should see mostly dry conditions with breezy trade winds. The combination of dry and breezy weather will elevate fire weather concerns this afternoon, but the current forecast keeps the wind speeds just below Red Flag Warning criteria.

On Sunday, we should see an increase in showers over windward and mauka areas especially during the morning hours. Breezy trade winds will continue but shift slightly more northeast compared to today.

Latest forecast guidance is showing a weak upper level low around the Big Island by Monday afternoon and this could lead to more shower activity over the slopes of the Big Island Monday and Tuesday afternoons. The moisture and stability does not look very impressive during this time, but we will continue to monitor the situation. Otherwise, mostly fair weather conditions are expected for rest of the state through at least the middle of next week. Trade winds should weaken to moderate speeds by Tuesday with light to moderate trade winds expected during the second half of next week.

AVIATION. High pressure to the north of the state will lead to moderate easterly trades today. However, with little moisture in place, showers will be sparse this afternoon. Low level moisture advecting into the area tonight will bring the return of scattered showers to the windward portions of all islands.

AIRMET SIERRA remains in effect for north through east sections of the Big Island above 2000 feet for temp mountain obscuration due to clouds and showers.

AIRMET TANGO remains in effect below 9000 feet over and immediately south through west of all mountains due to tempo moderate turbulence.

MARINE. High pressure far north of the state will sustain moderate to locally strong trade winds through the rest of the weekend, possibly stretching into Monday. Winds are expected to ease by Monday night or early Tuesday. A Small Craft Advisory (SCA) is in effect, at least through Sunday afternoon, for the typically windier waters near Maui County and the Big Island.

The current north swell peaked and is now on the decline. This swell will gradually decrease over the next couple of days. East facing shores with northerly exposures will also be affected by this swell. A slightly smaller reinforcing north swell is expected to fill in Monday, and peak Monday night into Tuesday. Following this swell, there should be a series of north swells during the second half of next week into next weekend as weather systems in the North Pacific become more active.

Small, mainly background south swells are expected through Monday, with a slightly larger south swell expected to fill in Tuesday and Wednesday. Short-period choppy surf is expected along east facing shores through Monday, with a slight downward trend expected into the middle of next week as the trade winds decrease.

HFO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. Small Craft Advisory until 6 PM HST Sunday for Maalaea Bay- Pailolo Channel-Alenuihaha Channel-Big Island Leeward Waters-Big Island Southeast Waters.
