Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Honolulu HI 347 PM HST Fri Oct 15 2021

SYNOPSIS. A breezy trade wind weather pattern is expected through the weekend as a ridge of high pressure lies to our north. Clouds and passing showers will favor windward and mauka areas. Winds will become lighter early next week as a front approaches the area from the northwest. The front may reach Kauai by around Friday with an uptick in shower activity expected.

DISCUSSION. Breezy to locally windy trade winds are expected through the weekend as a ridge high pressure lies north of the state. A trough aloft has raised the temperature inversion across the east end of the island chain as indicated by the 00Z soundings. This trough will linger over the area through the weekend. Clouds and passing showers will favor windward and mauka areas with a few brief passing showers expected over some leeward locations.

A drier and more stable airmass is forecast to be over the area early next week with a decrease in shower activity expected. A southeast moving frontal boundary will slowly approach the area next week nudging the surface ridge southward in the process. This will result in trade winds becoming lighter across the region.

The southward progression of the front may reach the vicinity of Kauai by around Friday. This would likely result in shower activity increasing over and around Kauai. In the meantime, a new high will be building in north northwest of the state with northeast trade increasing as a result.

AVIATION. High pressure northeast of the state will maintain breezy trade winds across the state through Saturday. The strongest winds are expected across Maui County and the Big Island, particularly over mountain ridges, through valleys, and in the channels. Passing showers will bring MVFR conditions at times mainly over the windward areas. For now, AIRMET Tango remains in effect for moderate low- level mechanical turbulence over and immediately south through west of mountains of all islands. Although winds may weaken slightly on Saturday, AIRMET Tango will likely remain in effect over Maui County and the Big Island.

MARINE. Locally breezy trade winds will hold into the weekend. A Small Craft Advisory remains in effect for the typically windier waters around the Big Island and Maui County through Saturday afternoon, but may need to be extended into Sunday. Trade winds are then expected to ease early next week and stay at light to moderate levels into at least midweek.

Elevated surf along the east facing shores will slowly subside to average heights by the weekend, and to below average heights early next week.

The current northwest swell is small, with only slight hints showing at the PacIOOS Waimea Bay buoy. This may provide for a very minor foot or two this weekend. A larger north-northwest swell is forecast to build Tuesday afternoon and peak Wednesday, with surf possibly nearing the advisory levels. By the end of the new work week, guidance is showing another, larger, more north to north-northeast swell arriving to the islands.

Background energy will keep small surf along south facing shores into early next week. The next small, long period south swell is forecast to reach the islands Wednesday and slowly subside through late next week.

HFO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. Small Craft Advisory until 6 PM HST Saturday for Maalaea Bay- Pailolo Channel-Alenuihaha Channel-Big Island Leeward Waters-Big Island Southeast Waters.
